If you needed to purchase all these features in separate units you could spend several hours setting up and learning how to use the features of each unit, some of which would be duplicated. With the HP PSC 500, you'll find a substantial, sturdy, and professional-looking unit with easy-to-understand operations. You don't need to hook up to your PC, but we recommend that you do so that you get the benefits of every feature. We found the guide comprehensive, and by following it we had no need to repeat any steps. We just opened the cavelike control panel, installed two ink cartridges, installed the software, and voilà; the ready-made office was up and running.

The copier can work as a stand-alone, producing fine quality copies. We found that the HP PSC 500 runs faster than similar multifunctions we've tried, but still only delivered one page in 18 to 45 seconds, depending on how much inking is needed. We especially appreciated the automatic collation and reduction/enlargement features in this quiet unit. We couldn't control whether the copies would be in color or black and white, so things like proof marks in blue or highlighting in yellow appeared on our copies in color. On the other hand, photos and originals with color reproduce with excellent results. Reduction and enlargement options range from 25 percent to 400 percent in 1-percent increments, and you can run the numbers up or down, or use the presets.

The good qualities of the copier translate to the scanning and printing features as well. We always prefer a flatbed scanner for quick scans of documents, photos, and even books or three-dimensional objects.

You get vivid color and photo-quality using HP PhotoREt II color-layering technology for lifelike skin tones at 6.5 pages per minute (ppm). This machine is a nice, low cost machine. The flat top makes it really easy to use, as does the program that comes with it. The scanner does an above average job and with the editing program works well. The only downside is the ability to just push a button for a black and white copy of a colored page. You can get a higher cost model that offers that. If that's not an issue with you, don't spend the extra money to get it.

I would recommend this machine to others.

After often making trips to Kinkos to run off a few copies, I decided to replace our HP Deskjet printer with the PSC 500. And we gained a scanner in the process!

The PSC 500 make great prints, scans and copies. My only complaints is the mediocre scanning software included and that you can't make b&w copies of color documents. Otherwise, I love it, can't live without it...

I use this machine for everything. The color copies are phenomenal. The scanning is very easy to use. The printing is just great. I never thought I needed a multi-function unit until I got one! The installation instructions were very easy to follow.
