5.0 out of 5 stars DVD-R for Video/DVD+R for Data
I have 2 DVR/DVD-burners that I use to record t.v. shows (like a VCR but records to DVD's). My oldest machine's hard drive is going bad and that has caused it to have a lot of issues with recording to different brands of media. The most reliable DVD-R that I have found is the bright pink HP DVD-R. I have easily used over 1000 of these DVD's (between my computer and...

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THESE DISCS!
I'm getting about a one-in-ten failure rate with these discs on a Sony burner. I won't EVER buy them again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy these discs., February 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hewlett Packard 16X 50/Pack 4.7GB DVD-R (Electronics)
I bought these discs in January, 2011. I read the reviews on this very page, and I saw the warnings. Many reviews here claim these discs are defective. I ignored it, and bought them anyway.

Guess what? Out of the first 13 discs, I have 2 good ones. That's right. I've burned 13 discs, and only have 2 viable burns out of it. The other 11 burns have constant static and errors while viewing. Sound goes in and out, the video shows blurry digital errors, constantly. Whatever you burn on this disc, is unwatchable.

I have a lot left over, but I am just going to throw them in the garbage and buy different ones. It's a waste of time to burn all these discs. I have to re-do over and over until it finally works. No, it's not my computer. I have 2 desktop PC's, tried it on both. I have Memorex and Sony DVD-R discs, and Memorex DVD-RW's, and they work 100% perfect. I never received a single failure burn in my life until I bought these discs. In fact, my Memorex DVD-RW's are 2 years old and I have re-used them many times and still burn perfectly.

This is a complete waste of money. It is obvious that these are defective from the factory but were never recalled.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very unreliable, June 17, 2010

I have had an unfortunate 20% failure rate burning with these HP-branded discs, consistent on two different drive/computer configs. No other brand +R or -R has ever given me such trouble. Having had enough with the failures, I switched to a new pack of Memorex -Rs and all returned to normal. I have also previously noted my satisfaction with Verbatim 95098 +Rs (bought here from Amazon).

Avoid this product, as you have a wealth of other options and brands to choose from.

5.0 out of 5 stars DVD-R for Video/DVD+R for Data, January 20, 2008

I use the yellow HP DVD+R for data.

Here's a great tip that an IT expert gave me. Use DVD+R for (computer) data and DVD-R for video that you want to play on your DVD player (attached to your t.v.) because the old DVD players can't read the DVD+R format. Also, DVD+R is much more stable for data -- someone sent me some data files on a DVD-R and I couldn't even access them with one of my computers!

I had to go through five disks in order to write two recovery disks for my PC. At this rate, I might get 20 good disks out of the 50.

Take it from me and a friend of mine. We have bought hundreds of these! I never had one fail me yet! Neither has my friend and he burns more DVDR's than I do! No matter what the content, time after time, complete and durable. Quality is unsurpassed! Much like there electronic equipment. Those complaining are either novices and are making errors and blaming the disc. Either that or they have crappy burners. I can't figure it out! I use 3 different burners for different tasks and never an issue. I am about to order another spool of 50 right now in fact!

These things seem to work ok when they start recording and then the machine stops after half an hour or so. They keep failing. I do not know what is different about these.

Other discs have given me trouble on my Macbook but these work well. Though I've not gone through the entire spindle, all the discs burned so far have worked perfectly. I'd highly recommend these discs, especially for the Macbook's drive.

1.0 out of 5 stars by far...the worst dvds ever, December 17, 2011
This review is from: Hewlett Packard 16X 50/Pack 4.7GB DVD-R (Electronics)
Take it from a person who used to rely on a lot of dvds...
I used to be a heavy dvd-burning junkie, constantly buying all sorts of odd brands of cds and dvds because of how many files for work I needed to burn. One day I came across hp dvds that were just given to me for free. Seeing that just about any old brand worked for me, hp sounded reliable and I used them. I burned them on an old computer and am now attempting (notice this word) to retrieve these old files 4 years later. (Do note that the dvds I have are 8x and not the 16x considering the age of these dvds but I have noticed that their quality of dvds still have not improved considering everybody else's reviews.) 4 years later on 3 other computers attempting to read these dvds have just come in failure as they have crashed or failed to appear on all 3. (How much do we want to bet that these work beautifully on hp-only dvd drives or computers?)

Heed a warning from a very experienced dvd-burning user....DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNLESS YOU ENJOY WASTING MONEY. You're better off buying ANY brand of dvds except hp....that's how much I'm hating hp right now because the files I have are forever gone and not retrieveable. How much do I hate this product? If I can give this negative stars, that's what I would give it...-5 STARS.
