3.0 out of 5 stars Printer works--Installation can be terrible, August 18, 2008
This review is from: Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart D5360 Color USB Inkjet Printer (Electronics)
I cannot possibly give this printer higher than a 3 rating. Many individuals in my situation would probably give it a 1 and say that is too high a rating.

As a printer the D5360 performs quite well. It is a bit noisier than my venerable 10 year old HP 895CSE which it replaced but it does print very well and it is faster than the 895. I especially like the duplex printing capability. That feature is a definite plus. It prints excellent photos even without using the Photo Cartridge which I have yet to try.

Let me now tell you about my frustrating experience trying to install this printer on my Windows XP computer.

I've installed two previous HP printers and never had the troubles as I did with the D5360. I spent a total of five hours working on the problems which arose.

After I inserted the CD disk and clicked the usual acceptances and designated drives, etc. the program proceeded to install itself for about 4-5 minutes when I received the message "Fatal Error 2203." I was asked to uninstall what I had partially installed and attempt to install again. This I did three times to no avail.

I then downloaded four solutions from the HP support web site. These I performed in the following order:

1. Installed the error utility

2. I ran the access denied utility.

3. I re-registered the MSIexec service

4. I gave full permissions to all users for the program files folder.

None of these utilities or fixes worked and of course, after they failed, I was asked to uninstall the partially installed program before trying to install again.

At this point I logged into the HP Support site and asked for a live chat person. She took me through various steps and asked whether I was installing from the CD, whether I had tried downloading the printer and drivers from the web site. I told her I had used the CD.

She then asked if the printer icon was listed under printers and faxes. I said that it was.

She asked if I had connected the USB cable. I said that I had.

She asked whether the box for the printer port was checked. I said that it was.

She asked me to print a test page. That printed correctly.

She then asked me to print a Word document which it did.

So, I had installed the D5360 even though I kept getting a fatal error message!

My troubles were not and are not over, however. I had been interested in using the HP Solution Center for I had read that it could determine how much ink was left in my printer cartridges. Imagine my surprise when I clicked on HP solution center and was told that "No HP devices detected, Solution Center will now close."

I went through the steps suggested by HP support.

1. Checking connections and status. That did not work

2. Check that there is a printer icon in the printer folder. Of course there was.

3. I checked that the digital imaging monitor was running. It was not. So I was asked to check if files HPQTRA08 and HPOQSTE08 were running. They weren't. So I was asked to restart the computer and try again. They still were not running.

4. I was asked to check that the HPZPML driver was running. It wasn't. I then was asked to restart the computer.

5. The final solution suggested was to uninstall and reinstall the software. Before getting into that ordeal with fatal errors 2203 again I Googled the problem and found numerous users having gone through my grief and finding that malarkey was just a waste of time.

So I am using a printer that works reasonably well, but the software is not completely installed and probably will never be. Why, with what seems like hundreds of HP 5300 series printers having the problem HP doesn't step to the plate and work out a bona fide solution I do not know.

I share this story to caution purchasers that you may run into this problem and be prepared for a considerable amount of frustration.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice printer. Software can be better., August 2, 2008
This review is from: Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart D5360 Color USB Inkjet Printer (Electronics)
Prints nice, but the printer and mostly software is not ideal.

The installation CD (version 9) started talking to me in Russian despite default language is indeed English on my Win XP SP2. I downloaded version 10. This time it luckily talked English.

Custom installation went bad (I checked out these annoying "Shop with us" components). Default installation proceeded fine.

Legal size paper is too long for this guy to auto-print in duplex. One of the option tabs doesn't let you select auto-duplex with legal, another does, and, without any explanation, it just prints on one side.

The installation/uninstallation procedures are the most touchy I have ever seen. You have to [dis]connect USB cable exactly at the right moment. Most USB devices including Canon jets are rarely that sensitive.
