I hooked the Scanjet 4300 to my 333 mhz computer with windows 2000 without incident. I was up and running in 15 minutes. Nice image quality. Only downside is that you cant crop images like you can on other HP scanners. Otherwise, a fine product.

Will not work properly with Windows 2000 Professional,

Installation is not trouble free. Maybe it will work, maybe it will not. Have two computers with W2K and managed to get it going on one. While trying to find out what might have gone wrong I uninstalled the scanning software, installed it again and now I have a scanner software that will not work on either. First I tried the HP's Knowledge Data Base where you will find only obvious topics like: "Check that all cables are properly connected" and so on. I tried e-mail support and it takes two days to get an answer. Then I tried phone support to find out that, the support personnel does not know Windows 2000, their experience is limited to Windows 98. On other matters HP's quality is good, but scanning speed is slow compared to lower-priced Agfa, UMAX and Microtek scanners (maybe due to the scanning software). Even if you have the extra buck to buy 3rd party scanning software to control the HP ScanJet line I would not recommend it. Very disappointing product for HP's reputation.

This is my first scanner and it was recommended to me by someone who has been using HP scanners for years. It was easy to install and get started. And the scanned pictures look fantastic!!! Also, in resonse to the reviewer from Palmyra, PA: Yes, you can crop with this scanner. After the initial preview scan, use your mouse to box-off the portion of the image you want to save. Then proceed to complete the scan. The saved image will only be the portion you boxed-off.

Great Scanner,

I felt this scanner was an excellent addition to my home office. The image quality is great, and, for the money, scans pretty fast. I am currently running Windows Me and had to download the software upgrade for the buttons on the scanner to work, all of 20 seconds. It is a great scanner that produces time and time again. In my opinion, Hewlett-Packard produces some of the highest quality scanners and printers with a fair price. I highly recommend this scanner.

I'm not much of a computer person, so I always approach new equipment with trepidation. Didn't need to here: took it out of the box, plugged it in, loaded the software and was scanning right off the bat. I've had no problems, and I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a basic, no frills scanner. It does a very nice job and for the cost I don't think you could beat it.

One very good scanner,

This is my first HP product, and it certainly won't be my last. Installing this scanner on my Windows 98 system with my existing Lexmark printer was a breeze, as well as installing the included software. It was very easy to scan everything from photos to written text documents. The software was sometimes off when it came to selecting the type of document you want to scan (a black and white drawing instead of a color photograph, and vice versa), but you can easily change it and obtain the results you want. As with most other scanners, there is a printer pass-through port, which works well, though there may be slight pauses while printing. Other than that, this is a great HP scanner!

I originally used this scanner with 98se and was very happy with it. We upgraded to XP and the problems began. First XP wouldn't recognize it when I tried to connect it to the same USB port that it worked happily with before. I tweaked and fiddled and read on the web about a lot of people who had the same problem.Hp help was no help. I didn't have any of the suspect hardware they mentioned. I downloaded updates and tried to reset the compatibility. Nothing worked. So I connected it with the parallel cable. It now works but o-h s-o-o s-l-o-o-o-w-l-y. So I went from being fairly happy with this beast to being quite unhappy.

I bought this for our office where we occasionally need to scan a picture into a form we can print or OCR some boilerplate text.I hooked it up to a Windows 98SE machine. It's an older computer so I used the serial rather than the USB port. I'm not sure if this slowed the scanner down or not, but it does seem to move slower than my other scanner from a different manufacturer. It's also noisier. The software is adequate. It will allow for OCR. I'm not sure how easy it would be for someone new to using OCR or a scanner to get started, but I was up and running with only a couple of false starts-- it didn't like my word processing program (one of the biggies too, one that many people consider Perfect) but you can export the OCR file as text to wordpad with a little experimentation. All in all worth what I paid for it.

As of this writing, Amazon[.com] has this item on sale at a fantastic discount. I purchased it, got it up and working, and I've been nothing but pleased with the results. The instructions are simple yet clear, and the process is trouble free. There are plenty of other scanners that can do more and do them faster, but this HP scanner does all the fundamental tasks 90% of us will ever need, and it does them well. It is lightweight yet sturdy, and is a handsome-looking unit. My only complaint with it is the length of the USB cable. Another 12-18 inches would have been nice, as not everyone has a plethora of desk space within close proximity to the back of their hard drive.
