Fine wine...,

These guys just get better with every release. Well, except for 999, which was horrid. But this release is amazing. What is amazing is how almost every song on this huge double-disc set is so good. Also amazing is how this band keeps refining and polishing their basic methods, with no gimmicks, no extra ingredients. They just keep honing their craft and churning out perfect, riotous, towering, raging songs, album after album.
On this recording, the majority of the songs are in German. I found these German songs less memorable than usual for Agonoize, but that might be just a matter of the less familiar language? Regardless, that's something the American fan should be aware of. Lots of German lyrics. As far as content goes, they wisely avoid knee-jerk sacrilege or mention of demons or whatnot (their early work is polluted with that kind of nonsense). A song or two does stumble in terms of subject-matter, for example there is one song that seems to be anti-science, as if it is dehumanizing to study DNA or something. Also, there is perhaps one too many songs about a "femme fatale"-- songs that sound like they were written by someone who has trouble getting girls. But otherwise, just about every track is a keeper, with lyrics that are mostly focused on the personal/social. I highly recommend this CD, for anyone looking for hard-core EBM/Industrial, if you like Hocico, Tactical Sekt, Grendel, or things like that, this recording is right up there with the best of that group. |
