Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Hexbug Larva is a micro robotic creature that slithers forward on smooth surfaces using a slow, rhythmic flexing motion. Just like real larvae, each of these creepy crawlers reacts to its environment, instinctively changing direction upon sensing an object in its path and wriggling off to explore a clear, undisturbed path ahead. Its behavior is eerily mesmerizing to watch and interact with. The Hexbug Larva is CPSIA approved for kids ages 8 and up.The Hexbug Larva features a forward facing infrared sensor that allows it to detect fellow squirming larvae and other objects in its path. When the Hexbug Larva encounters a road block, it spins around on two micro robotic wheels hidden beneath its hard exterior shell and heads off in a new direction. Three button cell batteries are included. Color may vary.

Kids will love it, though, and I would recommend getting it to bring a few moments of fascination. momof4under6  |  3 reviewers made a similar statement

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor battery life November 19, 2011

Sadly I have to agree that the larva doesn't meet the standards of the other hexbug products. The battery in ours died an hour after we received it, prompting a complete meltdown.

This, the Hexbug Larva, was the third hexbug I bought for my two cats (the first two were the nano and the crab). The Nano was an instant hit, and so was the Larva!

The Larva doesn't move as fast as the Nano, but its larger size, louder sound, and more varied and intentional-seeming motion, make it just as loved by the furry people.

Another big positive is that the Larva seems as durable as the Nano, both being able to stand up to some brutal paw jabs from my two 15lb toms. (Please Note: there are a number of toys that can be safely left with the cats unsupervised, but the Hexbugs aren't among them - partly for the sake of the Hexbugs, but mostly for the cats' sake of course. Externally there's nothing unsafe about these robots, but there's of course the worry of them being broken or bitten into. Btw, choking is far more a worry with the Nano than with the Larva.)

As for battery life, the Larva seems pretty good actually. Its battery certainly won't last as long as the Nano's, but the battery life is perfectly acceptable - especially when you see for yourself how much motion is going on (which is a good thing in a cat toy, i think). Besides, you're likely going to be playing with this in very short bursts, especially if you're of the human persuasion - it's great to watch the cats interacting with it, but unless you're deconstructing it to find out how it works, it would get old very quickly for any non-furry person I would think. Even for the cats, I make sure to let them play with it for 3-4 mins at a time, so I get a number of days out of a battery (if not many sessions).

My cats get the final word: they really complain when I take the Larva and the Nano away! That's a rave review in my book!

This Larva was delivered with the switch in the 'on' position and the battery was dead. This item appears to be used and sold as new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Hexbug
The Hexbug Larva is smaller than I expected at just about 4" long, and it moves faster than I expected. But none of that detracts from this member of the Hexbug family. Read more
