Hexen is a brilliant game, but its N64 transfer is not.

In fact, the only thing praise worthy of the N64 conversion is the nice little paragraphs you get when traveling from one level to another. These little descriptions of where your going are not available in the PC version.

Great Game.

Hexen is a brilliant game, but its N64 transfer is not.

In fact, the only thing praise worthy of the N64 conversion is the nice little paragraphs you get when traveling from one level to another. These little descriptions of where your going are not available in the PC version.

Otherwise, Hexen 64 is a terrible mock up of what is a brilliant game on PCs today. Yes its dated, but many people have taken the source code and made it a much more enjoyable experience with better controls, lighting effects, and so on.

The only reason you should buy this, as far as Hexen fans are concerned, is the ease of having a multiplayer match.

If you've never played Hexen before, buy the PC version, go to http://www.doomsdayhq.com/ and download the source port there that allows smoother graphics, 3D model support, lighting effects, and more. This is the Hexen we die-hards know and love

In fact, you should also look into http://www.korax-heritage.com/kmod/faq.php for the single greatest Hexen MOD there is. It really takes the game to a whole new level.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the best or worst corridor shooter, April 11, 2000
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hexen (Game Cartridge)
Hexen 64 might not be the best Hexen game there is, but it's not as bad as most people say it is. The graphics are definitely subpar when compared to other Nintendo 64 corridor shooters because they're pixelated when you get close to the walls and other objects. The sound is decent, but nothing special.

The gameplay might not compare to others such as Goldeneye or Doom 64, but it's not that bad. It's fun to play 2-player and try to get through the levels. The control is also good. Hexen 64 isn't at the top rank of the corridor shooters, but it's not the worst that's ever been made.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this game!, December 10, 1999

This game is bad, simply bad. The graphics are either too fuzzy or too pixilated. The gameplay is awkward, and the sound is uninteresting. I bought this game thinking it would be similar to the PC version, I was sorely mistaken. Don't make my mistake if you're interested in this type of game get the PC version of the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hexen 64: An Underappreciated Gem, April 1, 2009

I have to disagree with John L. completely.

The N64 transfer of Hexen was great. As far as I know, the main game is functionally identical to the PC version. I am not aware of any missing characters, weapons, items, or levels from the PC original. Pleasantly surprising in and of itself, compared to most PC ports of the time, which usually had missing or redesigned levels.

Furthermore, the programmers of the N64 port actually made some very cool exclusive additions (besides the little paragraphs between levels). For example, it has a custom soundtrack remix. In my opinion, this remix is superior to the PC version.

More importantly, it has support for four player split-screen deathmatch or co-op on a single console. Hexen 64 was the first console FPS to implement this. 4P co-op was groundbreaking for the time, and a feature that is still somewhat uncommon on console FPSs today (via split-screen, or even system link for that matter). 4P co-op FPS play on one PC is nearly unheard of, and to even have 4P co-op play via LAN/Internet on Hexen PC would probably require a mod.

Also, while it is cool that they've added better lighting and 3D models to the PC version source port, it's also worth noting that these are fan-created modifications. This port was made years later than the original game, and it's not even authorized by Raven Software. Judging the N64 version's graphics by this port would be sort of like condemning the original Mac version of Marathon: Durandal because the graphics are not as good as the HD remix for Xbox Live Arcade.

3.0 out of 5 stars SOMEWHAT BORING AND KINDA STALE 5.75 OUT OF 10, November 30, 2007
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Hexen (Game Cartridge)
Hexen looks and plays almost identically to Doom except it's not as fun and it uses ancient weaponry and magic instead of guns. This game could've been deamed a classic, but unfortunately boredom mars the experience. Yes, you will find yourself bored and confused as to what you're supposed to do. The enemy designs look pretty cool, but the level designs are bland and uneventful. Speaking of enemies, they're pretty stupid... and I play the game on Archimage the hardest difficulty. Your missions are not very exciting along with the use of your weapons and magic, so you'll never feel like you rule all when you do with your powers as you feel in the Xbox 360 masterpiece Bioshock. Just go play Doom instead, unless you're looking for a Doom ripoff(If so, please avoid Zero Tolerance).

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent corridor shooter, November 10, 2000
By
jasenao (Dothan, Alabama, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hexen (Game Cartridge)
"Hexen 64" isn't the best corridor shooter for the Nintendo 64, but it's not as bad as some people might say it is. The graphics don't even compare to the other corridor shooters for the system, but some of them such as the caves and the level with the star bridge aren't bad, even though they're somewhat pixelated when you get close to certain objects. The sound effects and music are good enough, the control is well done, and the game can be fun most of the time.

The best thing about "Hexen 64" is that you can play a 2-player game where you and somebody else can both try to pass a level. You can choose from certain characters such as a wizard to try and make your way through the challenging levels. I wouldn't recommend buying "Hexen 64," but it is a good game to rent.
