Hey Batta Batta Swing: the Wild Old Days of Baseball,

This review is from: Hey Batta Batta Swing!: The Wild Old Days of Baseball (Hardcover)
Sally Cook's new book is packed with interesting baseball facts and history, and it's written in a light-hearted style both children and adults will enjoy. Even for someone who is not a baseball fan, I was amazed to discover the game was part of American culture as far back as the middle of the 19th century. The illustrations are fun and perfectly suit the subject matter.

Swinging into Summer,

This review is from: Hey Batta Batta Swing!: The Wild Old Days of Baseball (Hardcover)
Sally Cook's new book is a great way to welcome both baseball season and summer. It's the most fun you'll have with baseball unless it is going to say, a Red Sox/Yankees tied-to-the-end game! And it's not for kids only - it's a PERFECT Father's Day gift, for baseball fans and history buffs alike.

Soaking a runner????,

Think you know what a "can of corn" is? What about "tweeners?" I doubt you know their meanings in the context of baseball history!!
My 7 year old was fascinated by all he learned about baseball from this book, especially one old rule that allowed you to get a runner out by SOAKING him. (That means hitting him with the ball if he was off base.) Can we say OUCH?!! From players to teams to strange vocabulary, Hey Batta Batta Swing! covers it all. If you have a budding baseball fanatic in your home, I highly recommend this book!!!!

I am Babe Ruth's granddaughter, [...], and have read many books about baseball, many of them children's books. I am honored to write a review of this terrific book.
Have you ever wondered why baseball players wear uniforms? How they got their numbers? What is a "Banjo Hitter"? Did you know my grandfather was considered a "Portsider" and a member of "Murderer's Row"? Here, Sally Cook and James Charlton explain to children the history of baseball in a delightful light-hearted way. They use baseball slang to make it an entertaining and fun account of our National Pastime. As a "Crank" (fan) I can appreciate both James and Sally are talented "Hurlers"(pitchers) in "The Show"(Major Leagues) of chlldren's books. This book is a "Dinger"(a home run)! Sally and James are both "Aces" (The teams best pitchers). The illustrations by Ross MacDonald, are as timeless as the slang terms. This book is bright and cheerful and for all ages to enjoy. It is also a really great way to introduce children to the game. You and your children will want to read again and again!
