This review is from: Hey Celestial! (Audio CD)
Let me state upfront that I had never heard of this Seattle-based until I heard one of their songs played on WOXY, the internet-only indie-rock station that brings "The Future of Rock and Roll". After hearing them I decided to check them out.
"Hey Celestial!" (6 tracks, 23 min,) is the initial release of Siberian, originally released in March, 2007. If you're not familiar with their sound, it is guitar-driven, somewhat reminiscent of Editors with dueling electric guitar and great hooks. Opener "Soft Rains" (a Seattle reference?) sets the stage, with an immediate urgent sound to it. "Paper Birds" follows and is the band's signature song to date (more on that later), an irresistible bite of guitar hooks and melodies. The EP doesn't have a weak moment on it, but the stellar tune for me is the closer "Talk to the Moon", a beautiful tune with epic guitar work, just awesome. A mere six months following this EP, the band released its debut album "With Me" in the Fall of 2007, which expands on the ground work laid on this EP. "Paper Birds" is the only song from this EP that made the cut for the album, frankly making this EP an essential "must have" for appreciating the band. Siberian is gearing up for a national tour in the Spring of 2008, and I certainly hope to have a chance to catch them live soon. Meanwhile, "Hey Celestial!" is a great EP, highly recommended!
