This chunky board book joins several others by Jeanette Winter (Rock-A-Bye-Baby, The Itsy-Bitsy Spider and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star). The format is different in that each image fills two pages and the book must be held in a vertical position. The nursery rhyme is familiar and there is a lot of humor in her treatment of it. Bold illustrations with a cow in a skirt and a cat dressed to the nines playing a fiddle will elicit plenty of giggles while kids wonder about the dish running away with the spoon. 1999, Red Wagon Books/Harcourt. JEANETTE WINTER has written and illustrated many children's books based on true-life stories, including the highly acclaimed MAMA, The Librarian of Basra, and My Name Is Georgia. She lives in New York City.

over the moon,

Our 19 month old son loves this book! He likes to point out the different animals and characters, especially the big moon. This book is good for young children because you turn the pages quickly, as there's not much writing. The pictures are cute and colorful, especially the little dog who laughed!

Delightful illustrations reinvigorate the rhyme,

"Hey Diddle Diddle" reprints the familiar nursery rhyme with illustrations by Jeanette Winter. The artist brings new life to this rhyme with her whimsical, quirky creations. She makes very effective use of pastel colors set against a star-spangled, dark night sky. Her artwork is full of fun and imaginative touches, such as the lavender pinstripes on the cat's trousers. Winter has visualized a surreal fantasy landscape that is cheery and inviting, and populated with friendly-looking characters.
