PreS. This attempt to extend the well-known nursery rhyme falls flat. The rhymes are forced, and actions are dictated by the need for a rhyming verse rather than as a logical plot development. The pictures are even worse than the poorly written text. The characters are corny and lifeless. The little boy (the dog in the original) is just plain creepy looking with his tiny arms and oversized head. An iridescent coating has been put over some of the white and silver parts of the pictures, giving them a sheen similar to pastry with an egg wash. If you are looking for a story that builds on a favorite rhyme, try Robin Muller's Row, Row, Row Your Boat (Firefly, 1995) or Keith Baker's Big Fat Hen (Harcourt, 1994).?Dawn Ibey, Vancouver Public Library, Canada

I gave Hey Diddle Diddle to my 5 1/2 year old niece for Christmas while visiting my family at the end of December. You know how you never know what gift will be THE BIG HIT at Christmas time? I don't mind telling you that I was completely surprized at how she took to this book. I read it to her at least twice a day for an entire week. She loved this book. I ended up buying 3 more copies to send out to other children (boss' kid, etc.)

My two year old loves books in general but some capture his attention better than others. This one does a great job of engaging him in the pages especially the page where the little boy laughs while the sink overflows and the page with the train filled with good things to eat. The illustrations seem to be captivating for him.
