Kandi does well after her Xscape from the group,
By J. Highsmith (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hey Kandi (Audio CD)
I was hesitant to buy this CD at first, although I like the work that Kandi and her partner in music, Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs have put in with TLC, Destiny's Child, Faith Evans, Joe, etc. When I saw reviews from "Tony" and "I.B." I decided that I should take a chance. "Hey Kandi" is an impressive debut CD from Kandi, formerly of the group Xscape. The music is on point at all times and Kandi has a good presentation going on with all of her songs. The problem? Is the subject matter. With all the success that they have had with their past songs, you think Kandi and "She'kspere" would want to try a different subject matter. "What I'm Gon' Do To You", "Don't Think I'm Not", "Pants On Fire", "Can't Come Back", "Cheatin' On Me", after a few songs you get the point. Don't get me wrong, this is a tight CD. My personal favorite song is "Just So You Know", where Kandi reminds us of Xscape's slow jams of the past like "Understanding" and "Do You Want To". Other gems are "Hey Kandi", "Easier" w/Faith Evans, the 1st single "Don't Think I'm Not", and "Cheatin' On Me". If you like Kandi's days with Xscape then you will enjoy this CD. She just needs to change up the topics a little more the next time around.

With blazing lyrics and solid beats this debut is HOT! If BRANDY, MONICA, MYA or AALIYAH is your thang then buy this CD! It truly is worth the money!

AT LEAST SOME FRESH & NEW R&B,
By ZAKHOR (BORDEAUX, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hey Kandi (Audio CD)
No fake interludes on each songs, no diane warren ballads, no guests by DMX or Ja-Rule, no Rodney Jerkins Track, no samples, and no fake lyrix. With kandi, it's just some funky music by She'kspere & his crew that changes from the usual r&b trax and the lyrix are original too. Let's face it we don't have 12 "No Scrubs" on the album and that's the great surprise from party trax to ballads all the beats are hot to death. And with some executive production by Track Masters Tone & Poke the project can't be wrong. Maybe the best R&B album of the year, at least original, fresh. A Must have. Kandi Go On!

of late, kandi burruss has received a lot of attention for her abilities as a songwriter, but let's take a look at what she's actually accomplished with "bills, bills, bills" (destiny's child) and "no scrubs" (tlc). both songs, along with the majority of the material on her own album are formulaic, yet catchy, tunes that capitalize on the current fusion of pop and hip-hop to produce highly synchopated ditties, the only memorable part of which are the choruses. it's not as if she's turning out the highly introspective lyrics of more experienced artists, such as emmylou harris, or even experimenting with rhythms and melodies, like björk. moreover, her own compositions do little to showcase what years with the multi-platinum group xscape would lead one to believe is an incredible set of pipes. "can't come back" comes close, but doesn't compare with xscape tunes like "is my living in vain". moreover, when at a loss for words or beats, kandi revisits her own work ("just kickin' it", "don't think i'm not"). having said that, kandi is a talented artist. it would just be nice to see her focus her efforts on more challenging vocals than creating the perfect hit song.

1.-Hey Kandi(4,29)-8,5.I really like this song. The lyrics are really hot,I like the beat and her voice. The chrous is the worst thing in the song, which is something really strange. The bridge is really catchy.
2.-Cheatin'On Me(3,54)-5,7.Comparing this song with the rest of the songs, this is really a slow song. The lyrics are really cool, but it's probably the "Boring" song in the whole CD.The vocoder is very simple.I don't understand how could this be the second single of the album. 3.-What I'm Going'Do To You(3,50)-8,4-After this song, you will realize that MOST of the songs in this album has the same theme in the writting thing,Kandi writes always about the same:A boy who is with her and that comes late at night going out with other girls,so then Kandi do the same with him. Most of the songs talk about an ex-boyfriend who makes bad things to Kandi.Anyway this is really a Fast song, with great vocals and beats. 4.-Don't Think I'm Not(4,03)-8,8.Again she talks about lies and h*es."When you're out in the club,Don't think I'm not,Even when you're out making love,Don't think I'm not".This is a bit of the chrous. The chrous is really infectious and catchy. Is not really a fast song, but in the chrous the song gets faster. 5.-Pants On Fire(4,21)-9,2.Look at the "same ol same ol" lyrics in this song:"You said that you were at your boy's house,Pants on fire, liar, liar,I said that I was sleep but I lied,Pants on fire, liar, liar,You said that you were working all night,Pants on fire, liar, liar,I said that I never called that guy,Pants on fire, liar, liar.Again she talks about the boy going out with a ho,lol and that Kandi follow him everywhere he goes. The lyrics are kinda funny. The beat is one of the fastest in the whole album, great chrous and verses. 6.-Can't Come Back(4,02)-9,4.Again she talks about lies, but this lyrics are more serious. Her voice sounds really good here and this is her FIRST ballad.Really great song. 7.-I Wanna Know(3,39)-9,5.The most popish song and has really really fast beats. The chrous is funny and catchy. The lyrics are amazing. 8.-Talkin'Bout Me(4,28)-4,8.Here's a man rappin'but I don't know who he is.I don't really like the beat is very weird. The lyrics are really great, but is not catchy at all.Worst Song in the album. 9.-Sucka For You(3,52)-7,7.Funny song with amazing beats. The chrous is great too.The lyrics are really good too.The fastest song in the album. 10.-I Won't Bite My Tongue(3,44)-7,4.Lol,WTF?-This is so funny,Kandi talks about how bad the guy in question was in the bed:"Damn, you had the worst sex,Damn You didn't last a second"lol. And this is the chrous:"I won't bite my tongue,The "D" wasn't good so you can't get none,Our first will be our last,The "D" was trash sorry ass and ya need to know".Lol really funny. The song is is fast and great, but a little repetitive. 11.-Just So You Know(4,33)-7,3.The best lyrics on the whole CD are here. The is her Second ballad and it's really a great one.The song is really slow and a bit boring. The vocals are great though. 12.-Easier(4,23)-8,2.Her final song and another ballad. This is way better than the last one.It talks about Kandi's brother, that died. She sings with Faith Evans in this song.Sweet song. It's a great album, but the lyrics talks almost about the same thing, except the few ballads and one or two upbeats songs.Overall the album is great but in this Kind of music, you will like Rhona's album more than this one.

On Point,

This review is from: Hey Kandi (Audio CD)
All I have to say is this CD was one of the most underated CD's that has come out in awhile. Kandi sometimes is looked over for her writing and with this album she was overlooked for her singing talent. The album starts off with the intro that is clearly meant to let everyone know that she knew that this CD would be highly reviewed and was expecting some not to like it or doubt her ability. After one listen to this album I don't know why. 2. Hey Kandi-talks about Kandi not leaving her man no matter what her girls say. This serves as that song to the people that Call Kandi and male basher.(5/5) 3. Cheatin On Me- an ok song and not a good second single but does show Kandi in a less pop arena.(4/5) 4. What I'm Gonna Do- A song that tells what love can do when you make a person furious. would have been a good song with Left Eye in the video. (3/5) 5. Don't Think I'm Not- Good single that tells woman can do whatever a man can do.(5/5) 6. Pants on Fire-different kiddie vibe song but still good(3/5) 7. Can't Come Back- A song that lets everyone know Ms. Kandi can sing as if you would doubt.(5/5) 8. I Wanna Know-Tells the man she wants to know about his life and everything of his past so there will not be any secrets later.(5/5) 9. Talking Bout Me- song that reminds me Just Kickin from Xscape(3/5) 10. Sucka For You- Ok song that just gives the album a easy pop break.(4/5) 11. Won't Bite My Tongue. The girl will not bite her tongue if you didn't know you know by now.(4/5) 12. Just So YOu KNow- would have been a great single for her shows her vocal ability somewhat and tells them she can be in love.(5/5) 13. Easier- Great ballad about lost loved one that anyone can relate to would have been a great single also. ONe of best songs on album.(5/5) 14. Outro- If you still doubt hey the album showed you. This girl has written for everyone B2k, LSG, Alicia Keys, Samantha Mumba, Tommi, Mariah, Whitney, TLC, Destiny's Child, Zena, Lene, Boyz II Men, Gangsta Boo, Isyss, Nsync, Blu Cantrell,Cherish,Sole, Usher, Ginuwine, Monica, and many more. I highly suggest this album and any future albums from her she is on point.

Promising Debut,
By
This review is from: Hey Kandi (Audio CD)
Kandi Burgess is from the R&B group Xscape, and this is her first album, and its promising debut album. Between the break of Xscape a few years ago and the release of this album, Kandi helped write some hit songs in R&B music. Mainly Destiny Child's "Bills Bills Bills" and TLC's "No Scrubs". Kandi also wrote some songs with Mariah Carey on her 1999 album RAINBOW. Kandi uses the same formula on HEY KANDI, her debut album, which has some really good uptempo R&B tracks and some touching ballads. The opening track, "Hey Kandi" is a song written from the perspective of a friend giving advice to Kandi, that her man isn't worth the time to waste on. It's a funky R&B song and a great way to start the album. Another great uptempo is the instantly catchy "I Wanna Know", which has one of the catchiest choruses and is instantly sing-along-able. "Don't Think I'm Not" is an instant club hit, as is "What I'm Gon' Do To You", or "Pants On Fire". Then we have some really touching ballads, namely the standout track "Easier" about dealing with the death of a loved one, the song features Faith Evans in the duet. "Cheatin On Me" and "Can't Come Back" are heartbreaking tales of betrayal. Another highlight is "Just So You Know". Overall Kandi has proved she can write great songs for others, and for herself. Give HEY KANDI a try.

What 'Destinys Child: Survivor' should have contained!,
This review is from: Hey Kandi (Audio CD)
After being very impressed with the P!NK album, I decided to try Kandis too. I am very impressed! Whilst P!NKs albums songs all sounded the same (with the exception of Split Personality and Most Girls), Kandi has suck to her Desintys Child stylings nut in the process written some very innovative tracks. The first single, Don't Think I'm Not, you should all be familiar with. It is a clever hybrid of a ballad with a very catchy uptempo chorus. The perfect song to release as a debut in my opinion, although not the best track on the album. 'What I'm Gonna Do To You' is has an incredibly quick beat, which is one of its good points. The electric quitar which backs the chorus is also a nice touch. This is probably best described as a cross between Don't Think I'm Not and Bug-aBoo. She NEEDS to release this as a sinlge! Very innovative, nothing quite like it! I Wanna Know at first could be mistaken for a filler track (like Destinys Childs So good). However, after a few listens it becomes so catchy that it just has to be sung along with! A very fun song, this also should definately be released as a single. The title track of this album is supported by the similar intros and outros. Another standout track, this would have been a good first single (to introduce everyone to Kandi), but admittedly doesn't have the hook of the above tracks mentioned. Still, another fun and innovative track, one of the best on the album. Those are the best 4 fast paced tracks. Ballad wise, the standout song (perhaps the best track on the album) is Easier. This is simply AMAZING! It is very sad, but the lyrics are incredibly articulate, some of the best I have ever heard. Probably the most credible song on the album, this is very emotional listening, but with a very uplifting chorus. Elsewhere on the album, Kandi attepts to recreate No Scrubs with 'I Won't Bite My Tongue'. The lyrics are along the same vein, but even nastier (and funnier!). This is really good, and could also be a nice single, although it isn't quite have the 'zing' of the other tracks above. The ballad 'Cheatin' On Me' is for some reason her next single. An incredibly odd choice for a followup to Don't Think I'm Not, this still isn't bad. This is one of 2 tracks not to have been written with Kandi, along the another good ballad in Where Ever You Go. 'Pants On Fire' is very much bubble-gum RnB, but INCREDIBLY catchy also, so another winner! Other tracks, such as 'Sucka For You' and 'Talkin' Bout Me' don't really bring anything new to the album. In conclusion, this is far better than the P!NK album, and although it only has 12 complete tracks, you will be amazed by how many of them standout! Best tracks: What I'm Gonna Do To You, Easier, I Wanna Know, Don't Think I'm Not and Hey Kandi.

I loved XScape...I loved Bills, Bills, Bills, Bug-A-Boo, ...., but this album isn't it... I mean Kandi can sing....., not doubt about that, I just felt that as great voice and as good (and successful) a songwriter as she deserves an album worthy of her level of talent. She's toooo good for her material, just like Toni Braxton.

Off The Hook!,

Kandi Burruss former member of Xscape keeps is keepin it real w/her hot new solo album "Hey Kandi". Most guys that have heard some of the tracks on the cd are probably thinkin oh no more man hating by Kandi. When actually, most of the songs are 2 sided like in "Pants on fire" they're both creeping which makes her music interesting. Another thing that makes her stand out is that you can really relate to her music and tell that somehow each song has a meaning and purpose for it's existance! All in all I think Hey Kandi...Is a hot FRESH NEW CD that is just plain off the hook. And this 24 year old DIVA is keepin it real by creating her own identity after leaving Xscape. I think all the young brothas and sistas will love this cd if they really want to hear music that you can really feel....
