Editorial Reviews

A CD full of red-hot swing with sizzling sax and guitar gymnastics. The Allen-Cohn Quartet is well seasoned, showcasing rich and rhythmic jazz. Joe Cohn’s lightning fingerstyle must be heard to be believed. Harry Allen is known as "the Frank Sinatra of the tenor saxophone". Joel Forbes and Chuck Riggs are vital to the resonance of the group.

5.0 out of 5 stars It don't get any better..., September 7, 2006

This is how tenor sax is supposed to be played. Harry Allen finds ideas in places where most players don't find places. I can't stop listening to him. I spent a recent long-distance road trip listening to Harry's CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look this CD over and SMILE: it's a dandy, May 19, 2006

This review is from: Hey Look Me Over (Audio CD)
Harry Allen and Joe Cohn have been playing together for quite a while now, and they are an excellent musical pair. This CD, recorded in August 2004, shows off the rapport the two have with each other and the high-quality jazz they produce. Joining them are Chuck Riggs (d), who is a long-time associate of theirs, and Joel Forbes (b).

Harry has been injecting a more Stan Getz-like sound in his playing lately, and on WITH THE WIND AND THE RAIN IN YOUR HAIR and I'LL ONLY MISS HER WHEN I THINK OF HER he conjures up a Getz sound image marvelously. But I still hear a lot of Zoot Sims in his playing, especially on up-tempo numbers such as IT'S BEEN A LONG, LONG TIME and SEVEN COME ELEVEN where, Zoot-like, he goes sailing through the changes with the greatest of ease. Al Cohn's TRAVISIMO is another up-tempo romp where Harry just eats up the changes. Joe is Al's son, of course, and his single-line approach on guitar is very modern but at the same time very lyrical. He is especially good on the title track, HEY, LOOK ME OVER. PICK YOURSELF UP features superb counterpoint between Harry and Joe throughout the piece, with only Forbes soloing; it's a most attractive cut.

Harry Allen is one of my favorite tenormen playing today and his recorded output seems to get better with each new CD. He's playing at peak performance level right about now, and it's a pleasure to hear his work. This is a terrific CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is jazz guys!, October 9, 2006

This review is from: Hey Look Me Over (Audio CD)
After almost 40 years of listening to thousands of jazz records and nearly 30 years of professional career as jazz guitarist and jazz guitar teacher is quite inusual to me to find new exiting stuff to listen to. After watching the Harry Allen/Joe Cohn 4tet at Umbria Jazz in summer 2006 I went completely mad about them. They are to me exactly what jazz should be! You couldn't not imagine better playing, swing, impromptu arrangements, feeling, cooking, phrasing, sound, fresh repertoire... what more can I say! Thankfully CDs are not going to wear because of excess listening... I have listened to this CD hundreds of time, and everytime is more and more enjoyable. Songs are not so often heard, the band has an incredible tight interplay and feeling, rhythm section is one of the best I ever heard, Harry and Joe are wonderful soloist, clever, skilled and melodic, you could write ANY solo of them and learn it, every phrase is a beatiful and swinging statement. Wow! I'm really going to buy ALL the available CDs of this fantastic quartet. It's a pity that in Italy Artistic Directors and Promoters are just looking for weird and avantgarde styles of jazz (those strange things... I don't really like that style), I'm sure that with bands like Harry Allen/Joe Cohn jazz would be really way more popular. Buy this CD!
