This One Which Concentrates Mainly On The 1960s & Non-Charters,
By AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hey! Look What I Found, Vol. 5 (Audio CD)
First of all, let me say at the outset that audiophiles will NOT like this series from Mavis of Canada as the sound quality is certainly not up to the standards of anything to emanate from the likes of Ace of London, Rhino, Varese-Sarabande, Eric Records, or Collectables. In fact, it tends to waver from barely adequate to satisfactory.
Even so, for those of us who grew up with the hiss and pop of the 78- and then the 45-rpm this is tolerable, and if you gather together all eleven volumes in the series (so far) you will have 297 selections you're not apt to find in too many top-quality releases (so far). Indeed, some you won't find anywhere else as many were minor hits by bona-fide One-Hit Wonders. It is also important to note that there are no liner notes whatsoever, although the insert does contain a re-listing of the tracks showing both the artist and tune's writer/composer. Because each is just a random continuance of the releases before it, and ranges from 1955 to the 1970's depending upon the volume, I will repeat this opening blurb in each, followed by some information you may find useful on each of the tracks. Those that did not make the Billboard national hits (but may have charted in Canada) are: For You Alone by Kenny Rogers (circa 1958 - pre-First Edition); Sleep Walk by Betsy Brye (circa 1959); Move Over Rover by The Mark IV (circa 1959); Little Bitty Johnny by Travis & Bob (circa 1959); English Country Garden by Jimmie Rodgers (1961 uncharted flip of A Little Dog Cried); At The High School Dance by R. Dean Taylor (circa 1961); What Is Love? by The Fi-Dells (circa 1961); Glad Rag Doll by Johnny Maddox (circa 1962); Livin' High by Vince Everett (circa 1964); Stand By Me by Cassius Clay (circa 1964 - yes, that's Muhammad Ali doing a fairly good job on the Ben E. King hit); There is only one legitimate hit from the 1950s in this volume, Plaything by Ted Newman which hit # 45 Billboard Pop Top 100 in October 1957 and was his only hit. Those that charted in the 1960's are: Look For A Star Part 1 by Garry Mills (# 26 Hot 100 in summer 1960 - not to be confused with Garry Miles who also had a hit with the same tune from the film Circus Of Horrors - see Volume 4); Hot Rod Lincoln by Johnny Bond (# 26 Hot 100 in September 1960); Time Machine by Dante & The Evergreens (# 73 Hot 100 in October 1960); (Theme From) My Three Sons by Lawrence Welk & His Orchestra (# 55 Hot 100 in April 1961); Sad Movies (Make Me Cry) by The Lennon Sisters with Billy Vaughn's orchestra (# 13 Adult Contemporary (AC)/# 56 Hot 100 in October 1961); The Bridge Of Love by Joe Dowell (# 10 AC/# 50 Hot 100 in November 1961); Cinderella by Jack Ross (# 16 Hot 100 in April 1962 - double-talk by the stand-up comic); What Are Boys Made Of by The Percells (# 53 Hot 100 in April 1963 and their only hit); Enamorado by Keith Colley (# 66 Hot 100 in October 1963 and his only hit); Little Eeefin Annie by Joe Perkins (# 76 Hot 100 in October 1963 for this One-Hit Wonder); Baby, I Do Love You by The Galens (# 70 Hot 100 in late 1963 - adaptation of the German folk song Du Du Liegst Mir Im Herzen and a 1949 hit by Russ Morgan as You, You, You Are The One); Sweet William by Millie Small (# 40 Hot 100 in late summer 1964); and Goldfinger by John Barry & His Orchestra (# 15 AC/# 72 Hot 100 in March 1965 from the James Bond film). The 1970's hits are: Mississippi by John Phillips (# 13 AC/# 32 Hot 100 in June 1970 - his only hit under that name, but of course he had quite a few as the lead with The Mamas & The Papas); Theme From Love Story by Francis Lai & His Orchestra (# 21 AC/# 31 Hot 100 instrumental in early 1971); Daytime Night-Time by Keith Hampshire (# 51 Hot 100 in late 1972/early 1973).

This review is from: Hey! Look What I Found, Vol. 5 (Audio CD)
As with the whole series...great collection but sadly the quality is as good as I could do myself using my home computer to convert my old records to CD.More effort needed if they do more in the series.

Better than usual by these bottom feeders. Three good ones; guess which. Don't buy.
