Kindergarten-Grade 1-Each book has four tales, all preceded by an introduction that tells what the story is about. A "Helping Your Brand-New Reader" page explains how to share these entries with the youngest readers. In the first title, the orange-striped feline searches for a mouse, plays with some yarn, wakes the African-American boy with whom she lives, and hides in a drawer. In the second volume, the mischievous Tabby chases things, hunts for food, swats some vegetables, and washes herself. The illustrations provide good context clues and mirror the humor of the texts.

My daughter is going into kindergarten and she is already reading (I think this has a lot to do with her using the Reader Rabbit Complete Learn to Read System.) Anyway we needed some books that had:

1. limited vocabulary, especially words that can be sounded out (this makes her proud) 2. repetition (to reinforce new words she just sounded out) 3. minimum pages (let it be over before she gets bored) 4. interesting story lines

Well, "Hey, Tabby Cat" was just what we were looking for. This is a collection of 4 short books. This collection is perfect for very new readers. It fits all of the criteria above for a very reasonable price.

we have a bunch of the brand new readers series... this is one of the favorites (along with mouse, winnie, worm...)

the stories are so short (just the right length for NEW readers) but always entertaining. how do they do that?? I know, they aren't going to win any literary awards for story content, but I love that the stories don't have to be boring just because the kids are new readers.

anyway, my 3 yo loves reading about tabby cat and his silliness. he especially likes the one where tabby cat swats all the veggies around and then gets a scolding. just typical cat mischief.
