5.0 out of 5 stars John Madden writes just like he talks!!!
He even sounds excited in print! Madden clearly loves the game of football, and his exuberance is evident throughout this book. His stories and anecdotes from both his coaching and broadcasting days are both hilarious and insightful. My own favorite part of this book were his reminisces of his days with the Raiders, when he coached that team to their first Superbowl...

4.0 out of 5 stars Madden is Football, December 13, 2006
A Kid's Review
Madden is football. John Madden was a good NFL player, a good coach, and now a funny football commentator. I liked this book because it was funny, I respect Madden, and that he has respect for everyone around him.
This book is really funny. One example is that once Madden stopped coaching, he was watching a Raider's game with a friend. The team playing the Raiders made a fatal mistake, they knocked Kenny Stabler( the Raider's quarter-back) flat on his butt. Even though the Raiders were down 24-7 Stabler threw four touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to win the game 28-24.
Secondly, I respect John Madden. He is just a really cool guy. He is so cool that he has been on television, hosted a radio show, wrote a book about his life so far, and has his own video game series. Also, he knows how to do his job whatever it is.
Finally, he respects everyone around him. He respects his players, his assistant coaches, other NFL players, other coaches even if he doesn't like them, NFL officiols, and pretty much everyone else. He will joke around with other people but he stops if it starts to go too far.
So I told you that I like this book because I respect Madden, he respects everyone around him, and because of the fact that this book is funny. I recommend this book to anyone that likes to read and that also know something about football.

Hey, Wait a Minute (I Wrote a Book) is a collection of random stories that appear out of John Madden's head. I enjoyed many of his oft interesting stories in the book while several of them were boring too. Of course, I learned a lot about him, his Oakland Raiders, the personnel and players within and outside of the team, and the history of NFL. Obviously, John Madden became the greatest announcer we've ever had the pleasure of listening to the last three decades, and he was the only one that I would listen to without muting the television. He bought a lot of fun to the game and stylized it, so it would be interesting to watch regardless of how good or bad the game may turn out to be. Sadly, he retired, and the NFL announcing is now a lost art because today, it's simply impossible to turn on any NFL game and hear a good one. So, pretty much, all NFL games are better seen without any sounds. All in all, I felt Hey, Wait a Minute (I Wrote a Book) is a great book to read for anyone interested in the game of NFL and can appreciate it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Madden's first book: Winner, October 8, 2009

Hey! Wait a minute! This is a really good book. It gets into the heart and mind of one of the NFL's all-time best head coaches and TV color commentators. I first read Hey Wait A Minute in the early 2000s, so found, in a few instances, some of his comments a bit dated (the book, after all, was published in 1984.) 99% of Madden's observations about football and life in general remain valid and interesting. Tales of his playing days, college and Oakland Raiders coaching experiences and early CBS broadcasting career with Pat Summerall make for a lively and well told story. Recommended without reservation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hes Madden as hell and hes not going to take it anymore, October 16, 2003

not to be confused with the book '"Hey, Wait a Minute!": Dealing With Feelings and Weight Control" John Madden's first published work deals with all sorts of issue from feelings to weight control. but instead of dealing with those issues on a psychiatrist's couch, it deals with them where they belong -- on the savage gridiron of the football field. if you're looking for some game where little virtual men run all over your t.v. screen, then look elsewhere, because while Madden has become synonymous with his namesake video football, before that he was eponymous with actual football and the playing and coaching thereof. madden's gee-whiz enthusiasm makes the world of football (playing, coaching, the superbowl, broadcasting, beer commercials, groin pulls) shimmer with the scintillating shine of the frill on a cheerleader's hotpants. madden even expresses astonishment at the fact that he wrote a book, even though one `dave anderson' appears somehow to have been involved. but make no mistake (or throw the red flag if you do), madden's outsized personality (not to mention figure!) comes through on every page, and if you can't help crack a smile at his endless logical positivism and ebullience, then you're probably a twisted, horrible person who enjoys baseball. hey wait a minute! I wrote a review!

JOHN MADDEN SCORES BIG WITH THIS BOOK. IT IS VERY HUMOROUS, INTERESTING, AND TO THE POINT. I ENJOYED THE REHASHING OF HIS DAYS WITH THE RAIDERS. ALSO HIS EXPERIENCE WITH THE LITE BEER COMMERCIALS IS VERY FUNNY. HIS INSIGHT AND EXPERIENCE IN THE BROADCASTING WORLD MAKE THIS BOOK A VERY ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE. A MUST READ FOR ANY FAN OF FOOTBALL AND THE RAIDERS. TOUCHDOWN JOHN MADDEN!

This review is from: Hey, wait a minute, I wrote a book
This book was about John Madden life when he was a coach. It talks about how after ten years of coach the Oakland Raiders. The book also talks about when he was playing football in high school and college and also when he got darfted to the NFL but during summer camp he tore his ACL and could not play football. It talks about how he started broadcasting for CBS. So throuhgout the book it talks his live and the thing he went through to get to where he was and where he is today.
