The World's Lightest Rolling Carry-On,
By fredtownward "The Analytical Mind; Have Brain... (Mocksville, North Carolina, United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Heys Xcase 20" Carry-On (Apparel)
Hammacher Schlemmer calls this the world's lightest rolling carry-on, and I must agree. It is HALF the weight of my old Travelpro soft-sided carry-ons, though they are somewhat larger in capacity since they were designed to absolutely max out the then current airline carry on limits.Light as a feather, easily maneuverable upon inline skate wheels, I had my 6 and 4 year-olds pulling them fully loaded around airports with no difficulties. Note: Heys is going through something of an unannounced model change with these items. Newer items have a built-in TSA-approved 3-digit combo lock; older items include an unattached NON-TSA-approved 3-digit combo lock, which is obviously useless for US travel. If you get sent an older one, and you have enough time before your trip, I suggest exchanging it for one with the built-in lock. Problems? Well, as expected, the surface scratches very easily. If that is a problem for you, I suggest paying extra to purchase matte finish Heys XCase-NS Carry On or exotic finish Heys XCase Exotic Carry On models. Chances are that you WILL be required to check it at the gate if you travel on small regional jets like we did. (If you regularly fly on such smaller aircraft, a Heys XCase Mini Carry On might be a better choice.) In addition the older one's handle will not lock at the half height level due to an obvious fit defect, which could be an issue for the short. We are debating whether or not to return it for exchange.

Light, sturdy, holds a ton & makes travel easier,

I've had my bag just under a year and it's been a terrific travel companion! When my husband gave it to me for Christmas last year, I thought it was pretty (candy apple red metallic), but I did not expect it to be very useful. I was wrong!!My typical travel is 3-4 days for business. With the help of some packing cubes, this bag is perfect for holding everything I need. For longer trips, it's possible to pack even more -- I'll admit to sitting on it to help close it enough to zip it up. It is STRONG!! My colleagues are always shocked that I can pack everything I need into such a small carry on bag. Because it's lightweight, it's easy to lift into overheads or carry down steps. It DOES scratch fairly easily -- and after a dozen or two trips, it is banged up a bit (mostly from cabs and hotel checking, versus air travel). But that's a small price to pay for a bag I have NEVER had to check, even on a regional jet. If it is not overstuffed, it seems to fit even in small overheads with relative ease. It also rolls effortlessly thru airports and I can usually wheel it to my seat on jets without trouble. When it arrived, it did smell strongly of paint, but it faded within a few weeks. I am somewhat concerned that since I use it so much and pack it pretty full that the zipper may break, etc. But I love the bag so I'll definitely buy another should that happen! For under $100, it's a steal.

Falling apart at the seams,

Looks great and very light but not the most durable. Granted I have had mine or 2 years now, but it's starting to fall apart at the seams at the lower part of the case. And it's happening on both sides.

we love this bag.. the only caveat is that silver isn't shiny, it's rather dull gray. the bag itself if very light. the handle has a very strong smell to it.. but the bag is great. We also bought the red one, which is very very nice looking. Scratches easy, but it goes with the territory!

spacious little traveler,

This 20" carry-on is remarkably spacious inside. It fit easily into the overhead bin and met the requirements for american airlines with an inch to spare. The outer shell is tougher than it looks and wipes clean. I purchased the shiney red carry-on because the color matched my car, but it comes in an array of colors. It is also available with a textured exterior that is not supposed to scratch as easily as the shiney one. I didn't experience any scratching at all and was in and out of 4 airplanes and multiple vehicles with multiple handlers. The only down sidethat I have found so far is that the handle can be a bit wonky. It didn't always catch in the "up" position and occasionaly slid down to mid point. Overall wonderful little suitcase. I will be purchasing the co-ordinating bags.

too flimsy to travel with,

This review is from: Heys Xcase 20" Carry-On (Apparel)
I bought this luggage because of the "lifetime warranty". After my 1st flight, the supposedly hard case luggage came back to me with a 6 inch crack in the side. Heys does not cover any damage sustained during travel, and does not take responsibility for selling a flimsy, weak "hard"case luggage. I will never buy Heys again.

Perfect for Carry On,

My husband and I, and one daughter have used these on weekend trips and to carry on a flight. They fit in any overhead compartment, and are the perfect dimensions for carry on to any airline. You wouldn't want to check them though. They are rather thin and easily dented. We can fit a whole week's worth of lightweight clothing for Hawaii in them. The colors are great too.

DO NOT BUY!! Poorly Made!,
This review is from: Heys Xcase 20" Carry-On (Apparel)
We purchased a piece of your large Heys luggage from a retailer in preparation for our honeymoon. The second day into our honeymoon in Italy, the wheel's rubber tread started to rip and the wheel also broke off its axle. When weighed at the airport, the large piece weighed in at 48lbs, so it should have stood up to the weight. Soon enough within 5 more days' time, the second wheel was nearly bare and we had two non-functioning wheels. Since we were dragging the luggage on broken wheels the upper handle also broke. We researched multiple retailers, and thought we found a good sturdy piece of luggage that would last our 2.5 weeks trip. We spent $79.99 on this piece for the largest sized Heys Luggage. We still had the receipt in our hands, and tags and pictures to send to the company. Their resolution was to send the luggage to them and they will fix it. Well, the luggage was not usable and was in the garbage! Their second solution = I BUY ANOTHER LUGGAGE AT WHOLESALE PRICE FOR $75! If I have to spend the same amount of money to replace a defective item, be very sure that I would not buy another HEYS! I would never wish this horrible experience on anyone! DO NOT BUY HEYS PRODUCTS! NOT MADE WELL!

Excellent for What It Is Designed For-,

Oh, the whining, the complaining! This isn't the world's lightest carryon; it's the world's lightest hardside carryon. One would think that reading the specs would give sufficient details that this is not the bag to take on safari, and Heys even recommends NOT checking this bag. This little bag, of which I have purchased two in the last couple of years, is excellent for an ultralight carryon or car bag for an overnight stay. As can be seen, it is quite rounded in the corners; though it may save barked ankles it does decrease the usable inside space slightly. For a guy, a pair of pants, a pullover shirt or two, a pair of underwear and socks and small toiletry set will pretty much fill the bag. But what a delightful size and at a weight less than many women's purses! The only real downside to this case is the outside finish. I purchased a black one for me and a fuschia one for a female. As Heys states clearly, these cases are painted, not impregnated with their colors. This means that rough handling will reveal the black casing under the various paint colors. It's why I wanted black for mine as its scratches don't show at all unless a few inches away. I travel a lot with my work and have several luggage sets. I don't use this little case all the time. However, when used as intended, it can be a great choice for an overnight or informal weekend stay, and at a size that can actually stay in the car. Just don't buy it for your African safari, or you'll be whining like some of the other reviewers! |
