Master songwriter Hugh Cornwell assembles his best collection of songs since 1984's stellar "Aural Sculpture" with the Stranglers. The fine cache of tunes is further enhanced by Laurie Latham's(who also produced "Aural Sculpture") brilliantly inventive production. This is one of those great records you can put on and take a mental journey with from beginning to end and never want to skip a track...it's that good. Stand-out tracks:"Gingerbread Girl", "Leave Me Alone", "The Big Sleep", "Teasy Weazy" and the climactic "The Prison's Going Down" (a tear-jerker of a song about estrangement, isolation, longing, and then finally, resignation- also has the best damn Harmonica solo I've heard in quite a while). "Hi Fi" finds Cornwell suddenly at the top of his game as a writer, and never sounding better. A masterwork!

This album gives a new approach of Hugh's music, with a set of new songs bringing us great sounds never met before in Hugh's career even in Stranglers period and ended with two classics solo unforgettable interpretted in a marvellous way like he used to do during his recent concerts: I saw him a few times latterly in concert and I have appreciate it, I am happy to find him back in the same way on this very good CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars a worthy new collection of pop songs., August 23, 2002
This review is from: Hi Fi (Audio CD)
Ok I've been a Stranglers fan for years, so I had to check this one out. After a couple of listens I can say that this a great cd.
Creative lyrics/arrangements as per usual, but with a psychedelic feel to it. If you like thoughtful pop music wit a bit of an edge check this one out. Particular favorite tracks:Gingerbread Girl, Miss Teasy Weazy, and Prisons going Down.

I always have a great pleasure to listen every day
this very good CD HIFI from Hugh; I have seen Hugh laterly
in Brighton and he is always in good condition on stage.
I don't understand the insanities of mister BUBBA (anonymous i suppose!),I have never insullted anybody on noticeboard or anywhere else, just giving responses at equal level. No further discussion this is not a noticeboard, thank you.
