Editorial Reviews

Guidance Recordings returns with the fifth volume in this acclaimed series showcasing the very best in modern dub music. Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions: Chapter 5 is an inspired collection of future roots riddims featuring contributions from downbeat masters Thievery Corporation, Sterotyp, G-Corp, Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band and many more. Here they join forces to deliver an album of heavyweight sounds that fuse technology with time honored tradition to propel the Jamaican art form know as dub safely into the 21st Century. The subtropical selection will appeal to reggae purists as well fans of the dubwise sounds of trip hop, 2 step, drum and bass , dancehall, and downtempo grooves. It’s true what dem say " The sound’s sweeter through the echo chamber!"

1.0 out of 5 stars Great series, horrible installment, January 14, 2004

Although this is my first review of an Amazon product, I've been shopping here for ~6 years, and have an extensive collection of music.

While that shouldn't convince you that I know what I'm talking about, the fact that I loved the first 4 installments (plus the Roots Combination CD), and grew up rocking out to great dub might help. ...

When the Hi-Fi Dub sessions came out, it was precisely what I had been hoping for in a studio CD for years. As I said, the first 5 CDs from in this series are *great*, especially if you've been looking for that fusion of old school dub and modern downtempo - *perfect* background/lounge/mellow house party music.

However, this CD (hi fi dub 5) is _horrible_ in comparison. It's not at all rootsy, and sounds ridiculously dancehall-ish. I am blown away that they chose to release this on the otherwise great hi-fi dub label. Do yourself a favour...buy the first 5 CDs, and stop there...this was a waste of my money.

I'm with the reviewer from Chicago. My car was broken into and they grabbed 100 of my favorite discs and I actually replaced this one before many of the others... classic mellow dub reggae rules, Scientist, King Tubby, Sly & The Revolutionaries... but sometimes it's necessary to pick up the tempo. I love to crank this disc while driving home after a night out. But yeah, it's good enough that I have actually been willing to pay for it twice! (Also check out 300% Dynamite for more up-tempo dancehall/reggae fun!)

2.0 out of 5 stars What happen with the quality?, January 21, 2004

If you take-off the remix of Thievery Corporation it will be difficult to have a positive opinion of this CD. Maybe you can be hooked if you know the taste of Sola Rosa or the talent of Peter Kruder(producer of one track) but this is not a good dub selection. The other four sessions were better in all the senses.
It's the fist record of Guidance that I do not want to recommend,
well, a black point in the superb catalogue of the label.
