After hearing some samples before release , I expected to hate this . I won't go into depth like the few reviewers before me . Suffice to say ; I can't take this out of my CD player . In fact , Hey Homies is playing in the background as I type this . It's been a rough winter in Philly & I digitally downloaded this during our latest ice storm . It's just what I needed to put a smile on my face . You can't stay in a bad mood while listening to Hi-Five Soup . That's a good thing .

This album sounds nothing like any previous The Aquabats! release, and yet seems to encompass them all at once.

The drums are the best drums I have ever heard on a The Aquabats! album. The rhythms are so weird but poppy. It's fantastic. The drum production is amazing. The album has a really good balance of fast songs vs slow songs. The production of this album is I think what's going to confuse some people. They mixed, in most of the songs the guitar quieter than anything else, which totally makes sense for this record, but is the exact opposite of their approach on the album previous to this, CHARGE!! which was nonstop fast songs, with only out ska song. This album has a lot more ska songs. No horns, but that should be expected at this point. They haven't used horns in a decade! However, the best part of this record is the lyrics! This album takes their tongue in cheek approach CHARGE!! (which although is a very silly record, is mostly viewed as a darker toned album due to the production) and sprinkles it heavily (smothers it) in their silly quirky style from The Floating Eye of Death. The album's sound sounds like if The Fury of The Aquabats!'s bass lines and CHARGE!!'s synths had a baby, and that baby had been raised by The Floating Eye of Death's guitar and vocal work. The drums completely stand out on this record as compasses so many different styles and so many unique sequencing ideas. Although all the instrumentation is really really great and produced just as it should be!

The songs:

1. The Shark Fighter!

Great opener, and even greater second single. There's great imagery in the lyrics! It's a funny, fast, awesome song that is equal parts The Aquabats!, Devo, and Sparks. This song draws most of it's influence from CHARGE!!

Great new record! Just proves that we can all be in our 30s now and still have fun. Thank you again, Aquabats, for making me not take life too seriously.

I bought this cd for my 3.5 year old son. He became a fan of aquabats after seeing them perform on Yo Gabba Gabba. From the first track "shark fighter' he was hooked, he loves almost every song. It really helps when we are stuck in traffic or on long rides, keeps him happy and dancing in his seat. You won't be disappointed with this high energy creative album.

The world is a better place with The Aquabats in it. In a music world filled to the brim with seriousness(in pretty much every genre), The Aquabats provide a much needed injection of fun. Sure, the serious stuff is great and certainly has it's place, but it's great to know that someone out there isn't taking things too seriously. The Aquabats aren't the only quirky ones, but they are definitely one of the most unique. I mean, five middle aged guys-three of them slightly overweight-in tight spandex posing as superheros? Songs about childish activities like the pizza day at school? Or mechanical apes? Here are a bunch of guys who not only don't care how silly they look and sound, but relish in it.......and I love them for it.
Hi-Five Soup is definitely the most childish of their albums, and will probably be the most polarizing. It's a far cry from the original ska sound, and veers away from the newer direction on Charge! It's still got that poppy punk meets Devo thing, but there is a lot of hip hop influence on this album. I don't like hip hop or rap at all, but how can you not smile at a rap song about the Luck Dragon from The Neverending Story? I mean, seriously, come on! "Hey Homies!" is another rap song....about hugs of all things! And Radio Down! has a hip hop/reggae feel to it(and Biz Markie shows up on it too). B.F.F! sounds like it came straight out of Yo Gabba Gabba, and while you might be embarrassed to listen to this at high volume with people in earshot, it's kinda hard to deny that it really isn't a bad song at all.
Most of the other songs have the Charge! feel, but this isn't Charge! Part 2. It's a fun album, pure and simple.

I've never been into using headphones. The only use I found for them was when I was recording something, but I now know the exact reason they were made... so that man may one day discover the new Aquabats! album, "Hi-Five Soup! I hadn't intended to make this blog into a music review site and I still don't, but this blog is for us to write about what's going on in our lives and for me right now, what's going on... is some "Hi-Five Soup!"

When it came out I listened to the album a couple of times and honestly wasn't feeling it. None of the songs stood out to me and I thought "I can't believe it's been almost six years since they put out 'Charge!'. So much has changed in my life since then." and for a minute I wondered if maybe I had outgrown the Aquabats! But I refused to accept that to be the case. I listened to it on repeat until something in me clicked. I was finally understanding the songs. Yes, this album is good, in fact it may be their greatest!

After playing the cd constantly, I decided to give it a listen on a nice set of headphones. Let me tell you, it's a whole new world. There are so many little things that you only really get to appreciate through a nice set of padded headphones.

The background vocals sound as though there are people in your head giving voice to all of your layers of thought at once. There are jokes told and reactions to the lead vocals that without the headphones I would never have noticed. These are crucial in songs like my favorite track, "Poppin' a Wheelie!" where they use a voice to sound like the wind whizzing by and also in "Radio Down!" which features Biz Markie.

I've noticed their keyboardist in band photos but never really thought of his role in the recording, until I put those headphones on.
