Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Instrumental virtuosity, compositional and arranging sophistication,
interactivity, and spontaneity this masterful recording has it all!
John Stein consistently releases high-quality jazz for Whaling City Sound.
Previous jazz radio success for Raising the Roof: peaked at #2, eight weeks
in Top 10, #8 for the entire year of 2010 more than all but 7 other CDs!
John has been writing columns for Just Jazz Guitar magazine for a number
of years, and has compiled the educational materials into two books that are
now available.

Review

One of the finest jazz guitarists you ll ever hear, with beautiful touch, tone,
swing, detail, and emotion. He is what you might call deep mainstream,
surprising at every turn with familiar material. Working with a clean,
undistorted classic jazz-guitar sound, he renders maximum swing and
expression. There s a wealth of detail the dips and turns of phrases, accents
falling like words that he gets at even the fastest tempos. --Boston Phoenix

Hi Fly is an impressive recording that strikes an intricate blend of meter, arrangement and excellence in musicianship. This release from John Stein and a superb rhythm section maintains a groove that is rhythmically attractive whether it be swinging, idyllic, exotic or down home. There's solid playing going on here and a high level of group empathy that keeps everything percolating, embellished with Stein's rich and warm guitar tone. Investment grade music, indeed.

John Stein - HI FLY: I've reviewed a LOT of John's superb jazz guitar work, most recently in issue # 101; his playing gets better every time I hear new works from him... on this outing he's joined by bassist John Lockwood, drummer Ze Eduardo Nazario, & a fantastic keyboardist, Jake Sherman. 10 absolutely high-energy tracks that will have jazz lovers th' world 'round spinning them over & over again! One of my favorites was the bouncy "Skippin'"... the thing that's most notable on this cut is that it sounds like each of the players is talking to the others - tasty, indeed! If it's "laid-back" you're after, you'll just love "Lazy Afternoon"... it's like "groove city", folks. It was the 5:23 closer, "Funkin' It Up", that stood out as my favorite piece, though... call/response in perfection! John & crew get a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from me, with an "EQ" (energy quotient) rating of 4.99 - AND, they get the "PICK" of this issue for "coolest guitar jazz CD". Get more information at John's HI-FLY page! Rotcod Zzaj
