Editorial Reviews

Vocalist/composer/arranger Sachal Vasandani has established himself as one of the most promising voices in modern jazz. Hi-Fly confirms the high praise showered on its two predecessors and proves the singer is one of the freshest, most versatile artists to emerge onto the scene in recent memory. Produced by renowned Grammy award winning bassist John Clayton and Grammy nominated Mack Avenue EVP of A&R Al Pryor, Hi-Fly is an exciting mix of standards, originals and pop covers showcasing Vasandani s ability to filter a wide range of material through his highly individual vision. Jon Hendricks a true statesman of jazz vocalese lends his evergreen voice to Sachal s music. A 2010 DownBeat Rising Star poll winner, Vasandani presented his distinctive blend of jazz and pop with the critically acclaimed release, We Move in 2009. Truly a state of the Union address for modern jazz vocals.

I had the pleasure of seeing Sachal perform in Portland last week. He's one of the best vocal stylists I've seen in many years, and the musicians he works with are top notch. The Porgy & Bess tunes and his cover of Amy Winehouse's "Love Is A Losing Game" are among my favorites on this album.

It's great to discover this bright young star on the rise, and I look forward to many more recordings and performances from him.

Sachal Vasandani is most definitely a rising young star! I happened to hear him sing ONE MINT JULEP on the radio, was struck by his voice and immediately ordered a copy of HI-FLY, it is my favorite CD of the summer! I listen to it every day, Sachal's phrasing is fantastic and the timbre of his voice is just beautiful. Each song is better then the last. And his cover of Amy Winehouse's LOVE IS A LOSING GAME is terrific. (I was lucky to actually see him perform in Westhampton, NY and he and his band blew me away.) I am now a devoted Sachal fan and I think that this album is a must for any jazz lover! I look forward to following the career of this amazing young artist.

I love this 3rd CD from Sachal. He really knows how to sing, I wonder why he is not more mainstream. I have all of his CD's.

A lot of people have raved about Sachal Vasandani, one of the smoothest young voices in jazz today. I sort of demurred on "We Move"; I thought he was a bit too smooth and pulled back there, but I acknowledged his potential in a 4-star review.

I'm about to join the chorus of ravers. This c.d. is a vast improvement, IMO, from "We Move." In this recording, Sachal displays freedom of approach that I thought was missing before.

Check out his two duets with Jon Hendricks, the title track and IMO the highlight of the album, Ray Charles' "One Mint Julep." Hendricks gets Sachal out of his shell a bit, and he scats with the master as well as the master himself.

Also check out what he does on "That's All I Want From You." He caresses the tune, then pops out a high b in a solid falsetto.

Or check out the way he covers "All the Way." The Cahn/Van Heusen standard has been done a million times, and Sinatra (and Jimmy Scott, IMO) set the bar for it; but Sachal's version, again with his strong falsetto, matches up. Likewise, he shows versatility and power on Amy Winehouse's "Love Is A Losing Game."

All of this is to say, he has freed his voice. Free your voice, and your art will follow.

I'm tempted to give this 4 stars, only because I don't think Sachal Vasandani is even close to hitting his peak, and I ought to save the 5 star review for when he does. But this is such an improvement over the prior recording, and I've enjoyed listening to it so much in the past few months, that I gotta go 5. Well done. RC
