Very Disapointing Mastering,
By
This review is from: Hi De Ho Man (Audio CD)
I used to own this set on vinyl (actually I still do, but I rarely play records), & I remember really liking it; in fact other then Betty Boop cartoons, the original 2 LP set was my introduction to Cab Calloway many years ago. It consists of 1940's CBS recordings, some of which aren't real easy to find, & I was really happy to see a cd release.
Unfortunately, the mastering is pretty bad (I don't remember the record sounding this bad, but it may have). It isn't even consistent in how it's bad: some tracks are muddy, some are bright & many have a bunch of irritating reverb that was added during mastering. Unfortunately, I need to recommend staying away from this one. This is especially disappointing as the sound quality on the 90's Sony release taken from the same time period Are You Hep to the Jive is superb; & while this is officially on "Wounded Bird" (who are known for poor sound quality) it is a co branded release with Sony. They reproduce the original liner notes, but in TEENY print that I find unreadable. Very disappointing.
