Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Like Strip Search [BKL Mr 15 04], this is a showcase, prospectively the first of several, of new comics talent. Its four editors, already responsible for four issues of Hi-Horse Comics and a Web site, are some of the new talents on view, but with 17 other contributors, they hardly hog the pages. The contributions of all 21 show them working in frankly alternative-cartoonish styles. Editor Arey's three slice-o'-life comic sketches have an R. Crumb-ish look, Damien Jay would surprise no one if he copped to liking Peter (The Bradleys) Bagge, and coeditor Andrice Arp's cautionary "The Television" recalls Crumb's fellow sixties underground cartoonist, Kim Deitch. Influence-spotting is fun, but what's more important is that nearly all these artists essay storytelling and succeed at it more reliably than do Strip Search's often graphically flashier contributors. Most of the joke stories are funny; supernatural stories by Thien Pham and Jesse Reklaw ("Tired") and Zack Soto ("Day 34") are effectively atmospheric; coeditor Joan Reilly's memoir is gratifyingly textured; and so on. More please, from everyone involved. Ray Olson

4.0 out of 5 stars Cutting edge comics, sometimes quite literally, November 28, 2010
This review is from: Hi-Horse Omnibus Volume 1 (Paperback)
Modern alternative comics are simultaneously amusing and disturbing to people like me that grew up in the age of the strict comics code. Before the relaxation of the censorship rules, the content of comics was sanitized to the point of blandness. There could not be even the slightest of sexual innuendo or hints of any other "dirty" body function or brutal violence.
This collection of comics is generally for adults, although given what happens in movies, it is far tamer than what often passes for PG-13 entertainment. There is violence, strong sexual suggestion, anger and swearing, bathroom humor and even a hint of incest.
Although there have been many technological changes over the last fifty years, human behaviors largely have not. There was a great deal of violence fifty years ago; people did not speak of it outside their homes and it did not appear in the general entertainment. Therefore, the comics have changed to become more real, reality has not been altered all that much.
If you have a dark, macabre sense of humor, then these comics will appeal to you. There are no happy endings; in most cases the conclusions are as ambiguous as life, where things often just end. If you do not have such a sense of humor, then you will probably find the content boring or distasteful.

If for nothing else, to see young emergent artists come out of the chrysalis. Zettwoch is more than enough of a reason to own this.
