An undiscovered Star still not found., April 19, 2004
This review is from: The Hi Singles A's & B's (Audio CD)
It is a shame that Ann never really made huge sales or success.
She would never make a top 10, or even top 20 pop hit in her career as a singer.Don't get me wrong, that does not reflect the quality of her work. Gutsy, ragged, intense one moment, tender, emotional, sweet sounding in another. Ann is most often compared to Tina Turner.A big honor.Ann was called the greatest 'undiscovered' star since Lorrain Ellison.Ann played the south, and other parts of the country, where southern soul was still prominent in the mid 1970s.She arrived at a time when Disco and funk where coming into season and tradtional soul was being phased out. Her greatest records are "I can't stand the rain" for which she garnered a Grammy nomination, "You keep me hangin on" (also grammy nominated) and the bitter "I feel like Breakin up somebody's home" Her music is in true tradtional southern soul form, a prime example of the craft.Loud horn section and the pounding bass linemix together to create some great music. If you like singers like Tina Turner, Mavis Staples, and Candi Staton, Ann is the right singer for you.
