Comfortable boot, excellent quality...
on January 26, 2011
I purchased these boots on a lightning deal, as I needed a new pair of boots and the price was good.
I also noticed the white "specks" on the lower part of the boots, which seems to be part of the material. I don't know that anyone would even notice the white specks if they were not specifically examining the boots within arm reach. They do not appear to be a flaw in the boot.
The upper part of the boot seems to be well made. I have not found any flaws or questions concerning the stitching or any of the material. From wearing the boots in the snow while hiking, they seem to be insulated. I was out in the cold, low 20 degree temperatures, and 4 - 8 inches of snow for several hours, and did not feel any effects of the cold on my feet. I did purchase a $5 can of waterproofing spray and treated the boots several times before first wearing the boots. My feet were completely dry through the hours in the snow.
Most boots take some time to break in, although some more than others. I felt this pair fell into the latter category. Give yourself plenty of time to break these boots in, as I only spent a few hours a day for a few days breaking them in before wearing them for an entire weekend. My feet were not sore, but the boots are very stiff for the first few weeks of wearing them. My other pair of boots were many years old, and were well worn, and I did not expect a quick break in period, but I felt that these did take longer than I would have expected. I've owned many pairs of boots over the years, including from my military days, and these took longer than average.
I'd definately recommend these boots to anyone, based on the quality and price. I purchased my pair on a gold box deal, but would probably pay the current price for the boots ($80) based on my experience with them over the past two months...
UPDATE - 12-11-12: After nearly two years of wearing these boots, I've had no issues. The color has worn a little where they have been scuffed, but I could easily fix that, but most importantly, since the break in period the boots have held up well. I'm not one to drag my feet on the ground, but do see wear on the soles of most of my shoes after two years. I've seen almost no wear on these shoes. Although I waterproofed these boots when I initially purchased them, I've yet to have any water issues inside the boots, with my feet remaining dry and without concern. This was an excellent buy, and a pair of boots that I expect will last longer than other hiking boots I've owned over the years, including Hi-Tec boots that I have owned.
