Right boot at the right price, July 4, 2009
This review is from: Hi-Tec Women's Sofala Mid WP Light Hiking Shoe (Apparel)
I was surprised to run across a light, quality, waterproof boot at this price point. I hadn't heard of Hi-Tec before running across these boots, but learned through a Google search that they are a reputable British company that specializes in moderately priced outdoor footwear. I, of course, wouldn't want to take off on a long slog through the hills or mountains all while trusting my tootsies to inferior materials and poor construction. Feeling confident about the information I'd gathered on Hi-Tec, I took a chance and ordered these.
Call me brave or something worse <smile>, but I wore these straight out of the box on a moderate 8.5 mile backpacking trip with about 30+ lbs lashed to my back. My feet felt fine and dandy when it was all said and done. No breaking-in period needed.
Here are a couple of quick points about these boots:
--> I crossed a small creek on the trip and found that the boots held up to their waterproof claim
--> The backs of the boots are tapered to the level of standard trail shoes (so that only the sides of the boots are high to reach the ankle)--I liked this feature quite a lot as I did not have to worry about the back of the boots rubbing away at my heels
--> I wear a 10.5 (a size that is unavailable in this shoe) but purchased an 11--The 11 turned out to be the perfect fit (fit like a 10.5) and allowed for swelling (i.e. I'd recommend you pick these up in a half size larger than your regular size)
--> The weight of these is negligible--I didn't feel weighed down by these although, as we got within a mile of camp, I couldn't wait to slip out of these and into sandals
All in all, great pair of boots for easy to moderate hikes that will hold their own if you need to cross a creek or two, or stomp through puddles. The best part is that no break in period is required. And boy is the price right.

Hi-Tec Sofala Hiking Boots, October 19, 2010
These boots were great for our hiking trip this past weekend. Comfortable, no need to break in. They run a little small so order a half size bigger. Tying these boots was a little troublesome. These really are waterproof had to walk thru some small streams. I feel for myself I need more arch support, but this in no way affects the way I feel about these boots great overall. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a great, comfortable and good looking boot. Thanks Hi-Tec and amazon.

First pair of Hiking Shoes, September 13, 2010
These are the most comfortable Hiking shoes. Didn't take much to break them in. Nice cushion around the ankle and great support. I have a weak right ankle and need support, but was worried these would rub my back ankle but they are very comfortable and well cushioned. I can't wait to take these to Palo Duro Canyon for a reall hiking trip!
