Product Description

Benefitting from an ultra-pure sounding NOS non-oversampling DAC design, HiFiMan's HM-601 is a warm, natural, and musical sounding player. If you crave audiophile quality sound in a portable digital audio player, but your mass market portable just doesn't cut it, the HM-601 is the digital device for you. And it doubles as a quality headphone amp. "What the HiFiman HM-601 does, it does extremely well," reports LFF in a HeadFi.org review for November 20, 2010. "It's musical and all types of genres sound fantastic on it. The headphone out is powerful enough to power some of the most power hungry headphones out there and the line out allows for even more flexibility should one need it." The HM-601 uses a Philips TDA1543 monolithic integrated dual 16-bit DAC, which Audiogon.com reports as having "a very analog or vinyl like presentation." It has a very similar sound to its bigger brother, the HM-602, because these two players share same DAC and headphone amplifier circuit. The HM-601 has slightly better bass extension than HM-602, and a little less sweetness and smooth texture in the midrange and high frequencies. The HM-601 incorporates an onboard 8 Gb flash memory for storing your digital audio files. With its two-position high/low gain switch, it can drive most headphones.

I had high hopes on the great sound everyone's talking about.

When you pressed the home button, it went to the home screen, and the sleep button always woke it up.

I've reviewed a lot of MP3 players, but this one has got the best sound quality of all.

I've reviewed a lot of MP3 players, but this one has got the best sound quality of all. The Hifiman HM-601 was built for one purpose only, to play music and make it sound really good. This is pretty large by modern standards, sort of like one of the original iPods in both user interface and size. The sound is simply sublime, warm, silky smooth, clean, clear, great resolution, lots of power (more than any other MP3 player I've tried). Higher notes are somewhat softened but still come through crisp and clear. This has an Analog sound, in other words it has a similar sound to an old high quality tape player.

So, on to the things I love about this player:

1) Sound quality, sound quality, and sound quality the best sound I've ever heard from an MP3 player.
2) A dedicated volume dial, old school style, allows you to easily adjust the volume by touch.
3) A digital line out -- great if you want to connect this to your stereo or portable amp.
4) High Gain, Low Gain switch -- allows you to adjust the range of the volume depending on how sensitive your headphones are (or speakers).
5) Hardware buttons for play, rewind, fast forward, mute, hold.
6) Accepts an SDHC card (class 4 works well I find) of up to 32GB so you can put a lot of music on an SDHC card.
7) Supports high quality FLAC file format as well as WAV, MP3.
8) Doesn't have a lot of silly features that I never use, it just plays music and it plays it very well.
9) Puts out a lot of power, enough to drive just about any set of headphones or even speakers all by itself.

And some things to be aware of that are not so great:

1) The UI is pretty minimal and there is no manual.
2) A bit bulky for carrying around, but it will fit in a pocket.

This review isn't about the HM-601 sound quality. The other techies here have provided lots of info in that regard. I bought mine from the Head-Direct booth at a recent trade show. I thought I would avoid some drama by skipping mail order/Paypal to China. My issues with the 601 are with everything but the sound quality. It is a very temperamental product. My unit won't power on unless it is plugged into the wall. The ports and switches on the body are cheap and have too much play. They don't provide the right feedback to assure you you've pressed, slid, inserted or toggled correctly. The paint front and back is glossy and a grease magnet. I can live with the simple UI, I just wanted a great music player. When I attempted to load more songs into the internal memory from my itunes music folder and the disconnected the player it wouldn't go beyond an "Updating HM601" pop-up screen and this was after a 10 minute wait to let the player do it's thing. When i tried reattaching the unit to my Mac half the music folders were corrupted and then my entire computer crashed!
I was certain from reading in various forums the 601 supported aiff.

I have owned Zune and iPod before. But, this player's league is way way above them. I haven't heard rockboxed clip+. But, u can read a lot of reviews in head-fi, this player has much better warm sound to the neutral sounding clip+. Supports flac which was very important for me. It plays the low resolution files well. I have many songs from 60s, 70s in 128kbps recording. This player almost produces a vinyl sound on them. I suspect the great amp in the player. The line out was great and my car speakers never sounded better.

about the quirks..HiFiman is a small company with limited customer support. But, they do their best to provide good service. Just expect some delays. The player is choosy when playing high resolution files. I recommend on 16/48 or 24/48 resolution at max. my songs at 96k didn't play in this player.

The UI is absolutely not a con for me. I bought this player only for Music. Not for Video, Not for elegant/sleek design. It looks like a box from 80's. But, man..the SQ is too good to be true. My Shure SE530 found a perfect match. 5 Stars.

I have bought many products from Head-Direct so I knew that I wasn't going to be taking any chances buying the HM-601 Digital Audio Player. I already have the HM-801 Player, which is the best sounding player I have ever heard, with features including an on-board DAC that allows you to use the DAC and/or amp with other musical sources such as home computers and laptops with USB outputs. The HM-801 is slightly larger and heavier for me to take on business trips, so I was looking for a similar unit that had most of the same attributes.

The sound quality out of the HM-601 is stupendous. It has 2GB of internal flash memory and allows the use of 32GD SDHC Class 4 cards which are small enough and allow you to you to carry around as many as you'd like, which in essence, gives you far more musical storage possibilities as any other player on the market. Also, like it's more expensive siblings that cost more, it plays 24/96 hi-rez .flac files. It plays almost every musical file known to man except for Apple Lossless which is proprietary to Apple products. Flac files are lossless music files which give you the same musical output as playing the CD itself but it takes up only about 75% of a .wav file which gives you the opportunity to hold more music for the player and yet, have the best sound files available for us audiophiles looking for the best sound possible in the portable realm.

The HM-601 has a user interface that is easy to use, and allows you to manipulate the home Main Menu screen by turning on and off which features that you want on the first page. The 601 uses a file folder system that has access via SD Card, Internal Memory, Artists, and Albums.
