The HiFiMan RE-400 are finely crafted in-ears. Stylish, terrific sounding, well made, and very fairly priced...a clean, clear window into the music, and a great value. Very much recommended." - Andre Marc, Audio/Video Revolution Features: Advanced ergonomics 8.5mm Titanium Diaphragm Neodymium magnet OFC Copper Cabling Driver designed and manufactured by HiFiMan

Hello everyone.

I don't usually do Amazon reviews (guess I should keep at it since it seems I buy something from this site every week ;-)) but I wanted to let possible future buyers know about these IEMs.

First of all, I don't call myself an audiophile because I'm not at the "level" of some other enthusiasts but I can say that I LOVE music and I LOVE headphones. In fact, I've tried a whole lot of headphones these past few years, and of course, own a few excellent full-sized ones. My favorites at this moment are MrSpeakers Mad Dogs (modified Fostex T50RPs), Ultrasone Signature Pros, Ultrasone Signature DJs, Denon D5000 and Sennheiser HD600s.

I guess on the "full-sized" headphones I'm Ok, but I wanted to try IEMs to use with my cellphone, Sony PS Vita and Sony PCM10 recorder. I wanted 1 set of IEMs to be "bassy" but not ear-piercing, something similar to the Denon D5000/Ultrasone Signature DJs/Yamaha Pro 500s, etc. So for this one I bought Denon's C300 IEM! I also wanted a more "neutral-ish" IEM similar to the HD600s/Mad Dogs/Signature Pros so I went with these Hifiman based on recommendations.

Now, I have to say, these $100 headphones sound REEEAAALLY Good! I was actually very surprised at how they performed with every genre I threw at it be it Alternative Rock, Punk, Post-hardcore, Metalcore, Pop and even some Dub and House. Yes, bass was a bit lacking for my taste (not bass extension, but mainly bass "slam") but it was Ok, I enjoyed them and that's the important thing!

Thing is, the left side stopped working after 1 week and I "baby" the heck out of my gear! Now every time I use them I have to slightly "touch" the left side until music comes up.

Thanks to the folks at HiFiMan for sending me a sample of their latest IEM to review.

Introduction

Around here, HiFiMan needs no introduction. I first learned of them in early 2010, back when they were known as Head-Direct (which is still the name of their web store) and I purchased the RE0 after my faithful V-Moda Bass-Freq IEMs gave up the ghost and reading impressions on Head-Fi. Since then I've been a fan and I've reviewed a few of their products over the past three years. So, when the RE-400 was released, I was pretty excited to give them a listen.

So, does the RE-400 have what it takes to carry on the HiFiMan legacy? Read on to find out.

Packaging and Accessories:The packaging is comprised of a long, rectangular black box with a translucent plastic outer sheath covering the IEMs, nestled within a thick foam insert. Accessories include four pairs of silicone tips ranging from a simple single flange set to two sets of new biflange tips and familiar black large biflange tips, similar to those included with previous models. Also included is a white rubbery cable winder, a bit of a superfluous accessory in my book, one that I would rather have seen omitted in favor of a proper carrying case.

Design and Build Quality: The metal housings are made of anodized aluminum with familiar long strain reliefs exiting the silver housings into a plasticky black cable that joins at the y-split and is from there sheathed in black nylon and terminates in a beefy and well relieved 45 degree L plug.

I'm not a fan of the nylon sheathing as it makes the cable quite noisy and prone to distracting microphonics but on the whole, the IEM seems well constructed.

HiFiMAN is an American manufacturer of high performance headphones and portable audio products. It was founded in 2007 by Dr. Fang Bian. I ordered the HiFiMAN RE-400 Waterline In-Ear Monitor (IEM) from Amazon, US and it was shipped out by Head-Direct. This IEM cost USD105 inclusive of shipping.

I've had various In Ear Monitors (IEMs) over the years from stock freebies to aftermarket brands such as UE, Sennheiser, V-Moda, Sony, Bose etc. to name a few. I've never taken IEMs very seriously as they are supposed to be 'fun on the go' and they are normally played through cheap non-audiophile grade mobile phones or mp3 players. After a few months of little use they either get lost, damaged, given away or returned within the very first month. Unfortunately, I just cannot stand any IEM sticking inside my ears for more than 30 mins, at a time, regardless of how good they sound.

I was recently in the lookout for an IEM to replace my Bose IE2. The Bose IE2 was a fun IEM that I used during workouts and evening walks. It did not stick deep inside my ear canals and were really comfortable to wear for longer periods of time. It is a very cleverly designed IEM that was somewhere between an IEM and over the ear headphone by design and comfort. The sound from the Bose IEM is not the best I've heard and I kept them only because of the comfort they offered. The IE2's cables started to wear out despite good care and it was about time to replace them.

After a lot of search and research I came across this Chinese brand HiFiMAN that is currently creating ripples amongst headphone audiophiles. I was initially attracted to their RE-Zero IEMs that were selling for as low as USD70 at Audio Advisor. They however had these small Stereo and TRS adaptors that kept me away from buying them.
