bright sight, poor instructions,
By
This review is from: HiViz Ruger GP100 Handgun Sight (Sports)
I love my Ruger GP100 revolver, but the stock front sight is terrible. It is a uniform dark color that is hard to see except in bright light. I purchased the Hi Viz fiber optic front sight to replace it.
Instructions for installing the sight are printed on the cardboard back of the package it comes in. Installation is very easy: use a punch to press in on the recessed button just above the muzzle of your Ruger revolver (obviously, for safety reasons, make sure your gun is completely empty of bullets first). While pressing in the button you simply lift the stock sight up and out from the back forward. The Hi Viz sight installs the same way in reverse. Press the button on your gun in and while doing so place the Hi Viz site on the gun by putting the back end in first and then lowering the front into place. Then release the front button on your gun to lock it in place. In bright light the Hi Viz sight seems to light up like a beacon. It's very easy to see. It is less visible in low light, but it's still better than the stock Ruger sight. The kit comes with several replacement fiber optic light pipes in both red and green, and one in white. A plastic holder is provided to store the extra pipes in -- you just rotate the holder top until an open slot is revealed and then drop the pipe into the holder. The holder is designed to hold more than just the provided extra pipes. It has a nifty little keychain attachment, too. My only gripe with this kit is that there are no instructions provided to explain how to replace the light pipes. A large flat "key" is provided to do this, but there is absolutely no information provided to explain how it's used. The Hi Viz web site provides no information about this procedure, either. I emailed their customer service about it. After waiting several days I finally received a response. Here is how you replace the light pipes: you slide the flat part of the key underneath the light pipe. It flattens a very small spring lever below the pipe that otherwise keeps it from pulling out. With that spring depressed you can slide the light pipe out backward from the front (I found it easiest to use the end of a paper clip to push it backward from the front hole, although I suppose you could use the end of another light pipe). The light pipe will pop out of the front holder. You can then remove the key once the light pipe is past the spring lever. You slide the light pipe completely out and push the new light pipe forward from the back until it pops into place in the front holder. If you look closely you will see the end of the spring sticking up into the small crevice of the light pipe. Why Hi Viz did not post this information on their web sight or include it with the installation information I don't know. It is not that intuitive. Overall, I am happy with the Hi Viz front sight. However, for the price they charge for it Hi Viz should at least provide a small instruction sheet with some instructions about how to properly store and replace the light pipes. Their web site is useless for information, and their customer service is slow.

GP100 HiViz Front Sight,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HiViz Ruger GP100 Handgun Sight (Sports)
I've been firing the Ruger GP100 with the factory provided front sights for over 15 years. As both a gunsmith and firearms instructor I must admit that the HiViz front sight insert makes a world of difference. The fiber optic lights up like search beacon and your eyes are automatically drawn exactly where they should be; to the front sight! You pick up the sights quicker, you pick up the target quicker, and consequently your rounds are down range faster and more accurately, as long as you do your part behind the gun. Al the light bars work well, but I chose the red fiber optic on mine. Installation was under 10 seconds and unless you use your gun as substitute for a hammer they should last various lifetimes. They work, they're easy to install, and they are inexpensive; What's not to like?

A big improvement.,

My GP100 came with a plain black serrated ramp front sight. I had trouble ascertaining my front sight quickly. I shopped for night sights, but no-one makes affordable ones for this model. I settled on this fiber optic.
Installation was a piece of cake. It was as close to drop-in as I could want. It's worth noting that you actually only get three colors of tubes: OPAQUE white (why?), red, and green. You get a couple spares of the reds and greens. I can now locate my front sight very quickly in all but the darkest lighting conditions. This is an excellent alternative to some of the overpriced tritium units.
