5.0 out of 5 stars Hibernation Book Review, July 23, 2010
This nonfiction book first caught my attention because of the simplicity of the text explanations and the graphic, natural pictures. Hall produced a book that is simple enough for beginning readers to read and for teachers to use as an introduction to the subject of hibernation. The simple explanation of hibernation provides the basic information needed to produce jumping off points in curious students' minds. "Hibernation" covers the topics of why animals hibernate, how they get ready, where they rest, and the cycle of hibernation. Kathy Stephens (2008), outlines 5 areas that one should review a non-fiction piece with in order to determine the quality of the non-fiction piece. These areas are cover, topic and content, illustrations, organization, and font type and size. The cover jumps at the reader because of the big letters, natural pictures, and side pictures. The inside illustrations are large, up close, and of real life animals. They add to the pictures, stopping the reader as they flip through the book, drawing them in. The table of contents and glossary allows the reader the beginning abilities to use literature for research purposes. My favorite part was the basic and easy to follow, both in format and explanation, of the text. It is a great match for beginning readers.
