3.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes funny, but generally overdone, April 18, 2004
This review is from: Hick is Chic: A Guide to Etiquette for the Grossly Unsophisticated (Paperback)
Jeff Foxworthy has made a career out of comedy that pokes fun at what is commonly termed the hick culture. While some of it is funny, a lot of it is overdone. When reading this short collection of jokes, I was reminded of the Sanford & Son sitcom starring Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson. With a black cast, they could use the now deadly n word in their dialogue when no other show could air it. Foxworthy, who claims a heritage as a redneck, uses it as a license to utter phrases that no one else could get away with.
In my opinion, the book would have been funnier if Foxworthy had been a bit subtler with his jabs. Instead, he has opted for the gross approach; using lines like "Whose feet stink?" and "Wipe your feet before entering so that you don't bring in what they sent the dog out to do. " The caricatures depict male and female characters that are dirty, shabbily dressed and ugly.
There is some humor in this book, but to enjoy it, your tastes must be pointed in a specific direction.
