Editorial Reviews

Small town teenager Luli (CHLOË GRACE MORETZ) escapes to Las Vegas, leaving behind her alcoholic and abusive parents. Armed with her smarts, a pistol and pocket money, she hitchhikes her way west. Along the way, Luli crosses paths with Eddie (EDDIE REDMAYNE), an unstable rebel with questionable motives and Glenda (BLAKE LIVELY), a cocaine-snorting drifter on the run. Adapted from the critically acclaimed novel by Andrea Portes, this powerful story pulls you into a provocative world of drugs, seduction and murder.

Customer Reviews

Very Good Acting.

I was thinking about turning it off at the beginning (For some reason I just could not get into it) but I stuck around.

Some folks may find Luli's coming-of-age story a little too dark because of the things she finds herself exposed to.

I went into this movie thinking it was going to be total garbage, based on the reviews by critics. Wow, was I surprised. Did the critics see the same film I saw? Not only is this film not garbage, but I really liked it! The acting is very good, especially the scene stealing Eddie Redmayne. Chloe was born to play Luli and Blake Lively even shows some acting chops as Glenda. Don't get me wrong, this is not a perfect film, it has it's pacing and plot hole problems and had I not read the book, I might even have been lost in a spot or two. It's definitely not a film for everyone based on the dark subject matter, but if you're looking for something good that is away from the mainstream dreck that Hollywood pumps out on a daily basis, then check this one out. This film is based on the excellent book by Andrea Portes and she even pens the screenplay. A pretty decent job for a first-time screenwriter. I suggest reading the book before seeing the movie. My only gripe is that I wish this DVD wasn't so bare bones. Hopefully there is a director's cut coming and how about a Blu-Ray???

We have all seen movies about teens who yearn for a more glamorous life and run away to try and find that life. So there is nothing really new about the overall plot and a lot of it is a bit cliche. But what makes this movie go is Chloe Moretz. She delivers what should be an Oscar worthy performance. She goes from innocent to precocious to sensual. Just like Brooke Shields had Pretty Baby and Dakota Fanning had Hound Dog, this is the movie that takes a popular young actress and puts her in situations that are sexually charged, dangerous, and yes....just plain hot.

Of course Chloe will probably not be nominated because of her age, the weakness of the overall plot, and because the PC crowd would find this movie "exploitive of a minor" or some such rubbish.

This movie is really about Chloe and her expansion into more mature roles that allow her in-born sensuality and sex-appeal to come forward. And the movie plays to these strengths. Make no mistake, Chloe has the same appeal to men as other "hot" female film stars in spite of her age. But she is not just some eye-candy girl, she is a first rate actress who is wise beyond her years. And the way she attracts legions of male admirers is undeniable. Obviously, Hollywood has noticed this and cast her accordingly. If you are one of her admirers, this movie is a must have.

Four stars only because the plot is a bit "tired".

"You could shake your knuckles at the sky, you could get mad and say I don't got nothing', you could get stuck." Thirteen year old Luli (Moretz) comes from a very messed up family. She spends the night of her 13th birthday at a bar with her parents and when the dad is too drunk to drive home a big fight occurs. When her mother leaves with an insurance man and her dad gets mad and leaves she is left alone. Deciding she needs a fresh start she heads out on her own for Las Vegas. The best way to describe this movie really is to compare it to the movie "Jolene" that came out a few years ago. But I'm guessing most people didn't see it so I will do my best. It sounds strange to say this but this is a coming of age story about a 13 year old girl. Through the people she meets on her way she has new life experiences that involves things she shouldn't learn about for at least 5 more years. Moretz is amazing in this and I just wonder how long it will take until she wins an Oscar. The cast in this is also very good and the movie is very much worth watching all the way to the surprising and bittersweet ending. I liked it. Overall, a very good movie about a not so typical life of a 13 year old. I give it a B.

I admit to being a big fan of Chloe Moretz-I think she is the finest young actress out there now,so I will check out all her work as she moves along in her career. On the weekend Dark Shadows was released,I was suprised to see this little film she was in had come out(I had heard nothing about it),and was curious to see it.

I was shocked at how every "pro critic" panned it on a level I have almost never seen. If you only look at those reviews, you might think it is the worst film ever made. I still wanted to see it,but it didn't come out anywhere that I could. In fact,on the week it was released on DVD,it wasn't even available on the cable system "on demand". The worst films made get treated better.

So the DVD shows up,and a friend and I(who also is a fan of hers)sit down to watch it. I warn her about the horrid reviews, and we were all set to see a very bad movie.

Were these paid critics watching the same film as I saw? It was dark, and often very intense. But it was a really good movie, with outstanding acting,a well done script, and well done in terms of filming and editing. There were no scenes of anything over the top shown on screen. If you are into watching things that explore the kind of subjects involved in this film, you should be sure and give it a chance.

To the "pro critics" who tried to destroy this film-maybe they need a new job, because they do not know anything about movies. This is a solid effort that can make you sad, make you feel, make you think, and once in awhile, make you have to chuckle a bit. It's worth giving it a chance to see what you think, and not what you were told to think.

I will buy it again if it is made available on blue-ray.
