new spin on an old rhyme,
By
This review is from: Hickory Dickory Dock (Hardcover)
We all know the nursery rhyme hickory dickory dock. But this picture book takes a new spin on the old nursery rhyme! This time to story is told to each hour on the clock. As the clock strikes a new hour we are introduced to a new friend!
We liked the collage style illustrations. They really added a lot to the story! Yes. This could be helpful in teaching children to tell time!

Fun to read to a group of preschoolers,
This review is from: Hickory Dickory Dock (Hardcover)
This take on the nursery rhyme is silly, fun, and fresh. Young children like joining in on the rhythmic refrain "Hickory, Dickory, Dock!" which keeps them engaged and focused. They're also entertained by the variety of animals who appear at each new hour. The illustrations are simple, bold, and easy for a group of children to see. The combination of repetitive, familiar rhymes and fun surprises holds and keeps children's attention.

Perfect for the toddler obsessed with clocks!,

Yes, the book is repetitive (what nursery rhyme isn't?) But the presence of a clock on every page kept my two year old's attention for days on end. He's been picking it out for story time over and over. We play pretend games with the mouse and this book has even assisted us in speech therapy.
The illustrations are lovely and bright and this book is beautifully simplistic.

Fair illustrations, too repetitive text for my tastes,
This review is from: Hickory Dickory Dock (Hardcover)
This book is an extension of the rhyme "Hickory Dickory Dock" with a verse for each number, and even the first verse is changed from the original. A sample:
"Hickory dickory dock, a bird sang to the clock. The clock struck two... away she flew! Hickory dickory dock." Each verse is essentially the same. In every illustration, the clock stands in the same spot, maybe with something new on its ledge, and with different animals and occurrences in the background. But, the clock is in the exact same spot, which makes the illustrations seem very static and flat despite everything else changing. It could be argued that the story and illustrations will help a child learn to read the time by the hands of a clock, but by the time, they can pick up such things, this book would probably be below their interests. The book was just too repetitive on the whole for my tastes. I didn't enjoy reading it. And, there's no reason an adult can't enjoy reading a good children's book, like All Things Bright and Beautiful or How Many Trucks Can a Tow Truck Tow? (Pictureback(R)) or I Will Rejoice: Celebrating Psalm 118 or Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening or Salmon Stream (Sharing Nature With Children Book). My children (ages 8, 6, 4, 2, and 10 mths) apparently agree with my opinion as this book is never brought to me to read, though many others return again and again.

Makes for a great story time,

My 14 months old daughter loves this book. I read it to her 3 times a day and each time she flips the pages with anticipation and a smile on her face. The illustration is very nice esp the big smiley moon towards the end. we love this book so much that we check it out from the library the same day we return it.
the only down side is that it is not a board book which means that the pages tear fairly quickly for a 14 month old. I wish they could make a board book version of it. |
