With the passing of Richard Hickox in 2008, Chandos has re-released a collection of most of his "greatest hits." For this particular 2-CD set, Hickox recorded three compositions composed by the great John Tavener (who passed away just last year). Theophany, Eis Thanaton, and We Shall See Him as He Is feature minimal and otherworldly melodies that borrow heavily from Greek Orthodox church music. As an Orthodox Christian himself, Tavener uses religious text for the choir and soloists.

WE SHALL SEE HIM AS HE IS
Composed in 1990, this is written for two tenors, a soprano, a cellist, and a choir & orchestra. With an average length of sixty minutes, WSSHAHI recreates the life of John the Apostle through eleven musical "Ikons." In typical Tavener fashion, the music is very minimal, but the spiritual uprising that the melodies create is breathtaking. The soft lyrical moments are handled with care, while the loud brash sequences (which are brief in some cases) never seem out of touch with the entire musical creation. For this collection, Chandos brings us a live recording made during a BBC Promenade Concert. The volume is a bit uneven at times: the solo cello can be a bit too soft, while the orchestra can be submerged by the entire choir. There are occasions of coughing from the audience and the players, but it's not too distracting. Richard Hickox and the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra (with BBC Welsh Chorus, The Britten Singers, and Chester Festival Chorus) do a fine job with the music. Nothing sounds under-rehearsed.

EIN THANATON
Dedicated to his late mother, Tavener composed this one back in 1987.
