It is very heavy on my IPod rotation now, paired with her Light of the Sun album that I listen to just about every day.

I've been a HUGE fan of Jill Scott since the beginning. In my opinion, the "VAULT" is a magnificant collection of her most amazing musical talents. I loved EVERY song on the album. "Running Away" was definitely one of my favorite cuts. To existing Jill Scott fans, this is definitely an album you want to add to your collection. To the new Jill Scott fans, be ready to be amazed!!

Believe it or not, Jill just may not be pleased with this release.
She left Hidden Beach prior to her contract being up and also left her unreleased material @ Hidden Beach.
This album of her unreleased songs is a volume of more to come to suffice her broken contractual agreement with her now former record label.
She conveyed her regrets in June's Ebony Magazine Issue, warning her readers to "never leave your songs where you yourself are leaving" (paraphrased, but you get the idea)
I hope that She and Steve McKeever's relationship is atleast amicable, i read that the songs compiled here were furnished in order by both Jill and Steve (CEO of Hidden Beach Recordings)so, it may just be.
Her music, her lyrics, her gift is Genius and i love it.
Who ever is thinking of purchasing this, treat yourself; trust me...you will love it too.

Jill Scott - The Original (from the Vault Vol. 1)

Some Steamy Soup, followed by the appetizer, a fresh salad, the tasty main course, and then a sweet dessert. Jill Scott's new scrumptious compilation, " Hidden Beach Presents The Original Jill Scott from the Vault, Vol. 1" is sure to serve up a five course meal with sounds delectable to your listening palate. There is no questioning or denying this soul goddess delivers time and time again. Jill Scott's recent compilation takes us through the entire ripening process of her as a mother, friend, lover, and singer. From beginning to end Scott walks us through her garden of sound and we get to taste the fruits of her labor in a passion that is sure to leave listeners full.

The "Love to Love prelude" of the album is a theatrical trailer of what is to come in the compilation immediately followed by "I don't know." From the jump Jill Scott traditionally begins to paint her powerful poetic masterpiece through imagery and lyrics. She pronounces proudly "I got to have ya," in a shameless pursuit of love and affection. This low resin doo-wop based track, encircled by flashy multi layered high atmospheric ad-libs bring universal energy to how the album is intended to flow. Suddenly "Wondering Why?" abruptly U-Turns the direction of the compilation and Jill Scott transitions from loves prideful predator to damsel in distress, all the while patiently inquiring, "Im just wondering why, you don't talk to me anymore." We know all to well that Jill Scott is not discomforted at all by being 100% transparent through her music. After expressing the dichotomy of her heart, Jill Scott displays the mastery of the wisdom that she has gained in life through "The Light.

After being a bit let down by Light of the Sun, it was more than refreshing to hear all the amazing tracks on this album. Of course, this compilation has the benefit of drawing on seven years of material, and it's clearly the top-shelf tracks of everything she recorded but did not release with Hidden Beach. One of the main things that makes this stand out over Light of the Sun is the regular presence of a full band playing behind her. The songs breathe so much more that way. As you can see from all the other reviews, if you are hesitant to buy this album, don't be! You'll love it.

For those keeping score you'll note Jill Scott released her new studio album The Light Of The Sun earlier this year. But it was on Warner Bros.,not her original label Hidden Beach. It's been common practice over the years for a small record label to lose one of it's big ticket items to a bigger label and than try to cash in on any new found success with albums of music from the vaults, usually disguised as new music. In this case Hidden Beach, with apparent respect for Jill's music decided to release vault material AS vault material, for the purpose of shinning a light on her creativity rather than trying to deceive the public. Considering the enormous vaults of Stevie Wonder,Prince and Michael Jackson they could've almost released an album every year, for the rest of their lives and never had to make any new music. But for some reason their recording output (excepting Prince in earlier years perhaps) has been relatively low. At least on the terms of the era Jill Scott appears to be side stepping this problem at least for herself.

The material on this album is extremely strong from song to song. And part of that strength is the insight into the creative process by the fact one often hears Jill announcing dud takes and even microphone static on some of the songs. Musically of course it's often a different matter. On "Love To Love","I Don't Know (Gotta Have You)" and a piano mix of "The Light" all possess that loping, funky style that indicate they probably come roughly from the period of her debut album. No such track dates are provided at least on this edition of the album.
