Book Description

November 5, 2007
From the author of Number One bestseller 'Damaged' comes the poignant and shocking memoir of Cathy's recent relationship with Tayo, a young boy she fosters whose good behaviour and polite manners hide a terrible past. Tayo arrives at Cathy's with only the clothes he stands up in. He has been brought to her by the police, but he is calm, polite, and very well spoken, and not at all like the children she normally fosters. The social worker gives Cathy the forms which should contain Tayo's history, but apart from his name and age, it is blank. Tayo has no past. Tayo is an 'invisible' child, kidnapped from his loving father in Nigeria and brought illegally to the UK by his drink and drugs dependent prostitute mother, where he is put to work in a sweat shop in Central London. When he sustains an injury and is no longer earning, he is cast out. When Cathy takes Tayo to school he points out a dozen different addresses where he has stayed in the last six months, often being left alone. Tayo lies, and manipulates situations to his own advantage and Cathy has to be continually on guard.Tayo's social worker searches all computer databases but there is no record of Tayo -- he has only attended school for 3 terms and has never seen a doctor. He and his mother have been evading the authorities by living 'underground'. With his mother recently released from prison, Tayo is desperate to live with his father in Nigeria, but no one can track him down or even prove that he exists.

More About the Author

I have been a writer for as long as I can remember - articles, short stories, poems, the odd radio play, and writing competitions. Like many writers it was a hobby, something I did almost furtively in my spare time, while employed in my 'bread and butter' work, and looking after my family; all the while waiting to be discovered. The big one, the novel I sent out and was rejected - 'we very much liked your story but our lists are full'. For the last 23 years I have also been a foster carer - looking after children who could not be cared for by their own parents, often rising at 4.30 to write as that was the only free (and quiet) time. Then miraculously the two halves of my life - writer and foster carer - came together in a way that was truly the stuff of dreams. I wrote about a child I had fostered and it immediately became a number one best seller.

Cathy Glass is my new favorite writer. I discovered her by chance while browsing books by another author. This is my third book I've read by her, and have ordered two more! All of her books relate to her personal experience as a foster parent in England. I enjoy the mystery surrounding the children until the full details unfold. I laugh, I cry, I get angry, and I can't put the book down until it's finished.

This is my favourite memoir of Cathy Glass' fostering experiences. There is a happy ending, almost unbelievable. Tayo was living with his incompetent and violent mother when he eventually was discovered and taken into care. What his past revealed was shocking yet Tayo's demeanor and manners belied this life. Tayo went through some emotional times at Cathy's home but he was a joy in the end, and the family was sorry, but so happy for him , when he left. The details in the book were very intriguing. I love Cathy's style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare Yourself for Hours of Reading!, June 17, 2011

This book has led to me purchasing all of Cathy Glass's books. I have to say, though, prepare yourself to be engrossed in the book until the end. I usually read a chapter or two of a book before closing my eyes to sleep at night. However, I could not put this book down!! I was constantly wanting to figure out what was going on with the child and his family- and hoping for the best for all. This book was so intriguing that it led to me reading the next of her books I could get ahold of and I had that book finished in a few days... If only I could devote a whole day to a book, this would be one to read.
I recommend this book and other Cathy Glass books to anyone, but especially those considering becoming a foster parent.
