I am aware of the benefit of drugs in treatment of Heart Disease as my husband is using them after having a stent placed in his heart. They are of great benefit for him. It was, however, difficult to get past the early chapters touting drugs as the best solution for prevention even for children. Don't give up, as he has some good advice in the later chapters of the...

This review is from: Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke: Inflammation, Cardiology's New Frontier (Paperback)
The most impressive aspect of this book is that it is comprehensive with respect to current best evidence of cardiac and related diseases, yet it remains succinct and extremely well designed for the patient.

I began to review this book and others due to an interest in identifying some of the best references for the patient conducting research within this domain. The author has succeeded in categorizing the issues cleanly. There are an incredible 55 chapters followed by a much needed glossary. However, the most impressive inclusion is a feature often missing from books of this type - a robust bibliography of the medical literature providing the evidence as well as a vehicle for the reader to explore further.

The knowledge here is inherently dynamic, changing often as new research refutes or supports prior claims. Wilde (the author) brings a unique and much needed mix. He targets different patient populations such as "women smokers" or "women and anger". And, although there are several case studies provided as examples, it appears he has been successful in limiting empirical or anecdotal data in favor of the literature. For example, chapters on fibrinogen and Omega 3 fatty acids are concluded with the study results and a nicely written summary. The book is designed quite well to readily foster a clearer understand for a patient and his/her family as well as encouraging the behavior of evidence seeking by critically reviewing the literature. As a clinician, this pattern of information seeking is encouraged and I'm excited that this behavior is also endorsed in Wilde's book. I think it is succinct enough to be read through from cover to cover for those with significant interest in the latest knowledge of cardiovascular illness as well as used a quick reference for topics such as viral and dietary etiologies, surgical risks, gender differences, comorbid risk factors such as sleep apnea, etc. I'm impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top choice in my collection of heart disease books., July 28, 2003

This review is from: Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke: Inflammation, Cardiology's New Frontier (Paperback)
So glad I found this book! 406 pages of solidly founded heart disease management for both prevention and treatment. Hidden Causes has many solid endorsements, all by MD specialists from UCLA , the MAYO clinic and several other major universities. I haven't seen any other book on strokes and heart disease that delves into so many facets and covers so many cutting edge approaches. I only wish that my parents could have had the advantage of the information that this wonderful book contains. This is a tremendous compilation of the latest heart management techniques as well as presenting previously established methods in a very clear and readable manner.
Rating: EXCELLENT.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that helps you stay alive...., August 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke: Inflammation, Cardiology's New Frontier (Paperback)
This is a very easily understandable book and seems to be written for me a layperson in cardiology. It has brought to light many areas that most people (and I am one) will and do suffer from these life threatening diseases.
If you only come away reading this book with the knowledge that you and only you can make the difference in keeping yourself alive. Very, very well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Particularly for the non-professional general reader, August 8, 2003
This review is from: Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke: Inflammation, Cardiology's New Frontier (Paperback)
Using a large font size especially suitable for the needs of older readers, Hidden Causes Of Heart Attack And Stroke by author, researcher and lecturer Christian Wilde is a superbly organized and presented "reader friendly" health guide to being proactive and taking good care of one's body. From the undeniable hazards of smoking; to the importance of stress management; the value of taking heart-friendly supplements such as fish oil and omega 3; the dangers of sleep apnea (a.k.a. snoring; and much more, Hidden Causes Of Heart Attack And Stroke is a highly recommended supplement to health and fitness reference shelves -- particularly for the non-professional general reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helping You to Help Yourself, September 23, 2003

Many thanks to Christian Wilde for writing this tremendous book in plain spoken, conversational English. While I can't say the topic makes for good light-hearted reading--a few of his tips on beating some of the "Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke" could very well save lives of potential victims of these deadly diseases and therefore his direct "no holds barred" approach may be what it takes to get the patient and their physicians to move to action. Wilde's book empowers folks to use the latest information to identify undiagnosed risk factors for Cardiovascular Disease (which they probably didn't know they had) and to take preventive action now to gain control of this vital aspect of their own healthcare. All the supporting medical endorsements can't be wrong!

5.0 out of 5 stars Got useful information first 5 minutes, January 20, 2008

This review is from: Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke: Inflammation, Cardiology's New Frontier (Paperback)
I figure most medical books are a dry scientific read, about as interesting as watching paint dry. I heard the author of this book on a radio interview, and enjoyed his style. So what the heck, I bought the book, and in the first five minutes of scanning, I picked up some useful supplement information. I have actually read 50% of the book and find it easy to read and follow. Best of all I can understand what the author is trying to relate. The big question here is Was it worth the Money? YES it was! If I use the knowledge I gained and create small healthy changes in my life, well then the price of the book was a Bargain!

This review is from: Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke: Inflammation, Cardiology's New Frontier (Paperback)
I have heard this author several times on the Art Bell show. I decided to buy the book, but am wondering about this statement on p. 367:
"The advice from the professionals is to definitely try to eliminate trans fats that are found in great amounts in coconut and palm oils. Be aware of them on labels and shun products with the killer phrase, "partially hydrogenated," particularly if the words appear amonth the first few entrants listed.

I was never under the impression or had knowledge that coconut oil and palm oil were/are trans fats.

I see no place, looking thru the index, where it is shown differently.

Otherwise, there seems to be some good advice in this book. I stand corrected if I am wrong about coconut oil and/or palm oil. (We use only organic oil.)

This review is from: Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke: Inflammation, Cardiology's New Frontier (Paperback)
This book is magnificent. It is easy to understand because it is not exclusively directed towards scientists. It provides detailed descriptions about new research that most doctors are not aware about yet as they are caught up in traditional methods to treat heart disease. It empowers those concerned about their cardiovascular health as it provides clear ways to avoid important risk factors. The choice of reading it is rewarding.
I am doing heart research at Winthrop University, and since heart disease runs in my family, I am interested to find out why so many of my ancestors suddenly died from a heart attack. If they come out with a new edition of this book I won't hesitate to read it.
