Kudos to Applewood Books for reprinting "The Hidden Clue", one of the hardest to find titles in the 38 volume Judy Bolton mystery series (1932-1967). This high quality softcover is slightly larger in size than the original Grosset & Dunlap picture cover edition which was originally published in 1964, but otherwise contains an exact replica of the original, with the cover art and internal illustrations intact. The only slip-up appears on Applewood's introductory title page in which the book's illustrator is identified as Pelagie Doane; Doane illustrated the first 19 titles in the series, after which an assortment of (mostly unidentified) artists took their turns.

Unlike many other contemporary series like Nancy Drew and the Dana Girls, the Judy Bolton books maintain a chronological order, with characters and events in each book affecting the plots of succeeding volumes in the series. For that reason, it is superb to see "The Hidden Clue" - a very difficult book to find since the original print run was so small - back in print, so that many of Judy's devoted fans can fill the holes remaining in their collections.

My LAST addition to my collection of Judy Bolton books, begun about 50 years ago when I was very young. Good books, not as good as some of the others, but definitely enjoyable.
