Book Description

March 7, 2000
Use the Internet. Know its dangers.

Internet use is catching on faster than any form of technology ever invented. Its potential for human benefit is beyond measure. But it is not without problems:

• Marriages break up over emotional relationships forged in chat rooms.
• College students risk grades and health to spend time online.
• Child abusers lure kids by contact through the internet.
• Adults spend fortunes to subscribe to internet pornography.

These people have crossed the boundary between healthy use and obsessive preoccupation with this versatile electronic medium. An avid net-surfer himself, therapist Gregory Jantz has seen an increasing number of clients coming to his counseling centers for help with internet abuse. Jantz writes for two audiences: those who are worried about a loved one's use of the net, and internet users who may have a problem. He offers both groups concrete and biblical steps for working towards change.

This review is from: Hidden Dangers of the Internet (Paperback)
In his book Dr. Jantz is giving a Christian way of dealing with issues related to problematic use of the Internet. This book is written to be read by a large population: no difficult words, an easy style, catching phrases. It can best be described as a self-help-book: it helps you to scrutinize your behavior (or that of loved ones) towards your computer and offers simple and down to earth advice as to how to change behavior according to a step-by-step method. Dr. Jantz writes with much common sense. His book shows he is familiar with working with families and with behavioral interventions. He includes advice for those who have children who are (too) interested in surfing the Net. For Europeans his writing style and his ideas might be too "American": At times Dr. Jantz seems to be more of a preacher than a therapist and he focuses very much on the nuclear family. For Christian Americans though, looking for guidance as to how to use the Internet in a sensible and healthy way, this book can be of great value.
