We heard this book at the Carver Library in Austin, TX. I thought it was a very cute tale and it had a wonderful message about manners.

A feast for the imagination!,
This review is from: The Hidden Feast: A folktale from the American South (Hardcover)
Delightful farm animals romp through this story to the feast at the end--with it's own hidden secrets. Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss have added to their impressive array of tellable folk tale picture books and story collections with this delectable version of a story from the African-American tradition. Don Tate's whimsical illustrations "tastefully" complement the text.

Wonderful Story with beautiful Illustrations,
This review is from: The Hidden Feast: A folktale from the American South (Hardcover)
My daughter loves this story and is entranced by the pictures. A fun tale with a lesson to teach gives something to both parent and child. The personalities of the animals are great and are sure to make any family smile (some may even remind you of your own family.) I highly recommend this book, an excellent story with great illustrations that is sure to become a modern classic.

Fun, memorable and a lesson!,

This is a lovely book! The story is descriptive of a farm setting and little ones will love the pictures of the parade of animals as they go to a neighbor's for dinner. Games are recounted in a lively way and on top of the fun and energy of the story- there is a lesson. When dinner is served the Rooster rudely stomps off thinking it is only cornbread. The more patient guests discover a wonderful suprise under the cornbread top! Rooster later realizes he missed out by jumping to conclusions without investigation. It is a great story to teach patience, tolerance as a guest and to keep an attitude of "expecting the best!" I'm want to share it with my friends and their small children. The southern references are sweet reminders of visits to my relatives farm and the wonderful dinners they would create. The pictures are colorful and lively, all in all I enjoyed the book very much and recommend it highly.

This book is great - the pictures are terrific and the story is just fun. A group of barnyard animals get together for a dinner party feast -they're in for a surprise and parents are in for a treat. The animals and their antics are funny and enjoyable. It's a pleasure to read this book to our son.
