Grade 7 Up?In this Arthurian tale, storyteller Odds Bodkin uses the bardic style of telling which combines music with story. This is a moving story of a boy raised by his mother, the widow of a great knight, who hides him from the world so completely that the lad only knows his name as "Beloved Son" rather than Percival, his true name. When at last the boy meets a knight in the forest, Percival realizes that there is a larger world beyond his mother's house, and he leaves to seek the life of a knight. His innocence makes him the source of ridicule at the hands of the other knights, and only when he meets an old knight does he receive the training which will prepare him for his destiny, the quest for the Holy Grail. Sometimes Sir Percival's guilelessness hurts him and those around him during this dangerous quest, but his pure heart, honesty and gentle nature enable him to prevail in the face of frightful odds. Bodkin's characteristic telling style combines an original musical score with powerful voice characterizations and narrative. The music features guitar and harp music as background as well as interludes between story segments. This heart-wrenching, lengthy story will probably appeal more to older listeners who will understand the mature feelings and dilemmas faced by Percival. This tape had my family enthralled for hours on a recent trip - we traveled to New York City and when we arrived at our friend's house, this tape was all we could talk about! It is a wonderful story by a truly talented man - thank you Odds Bodking for sharing your gift with us!

I first heard of Odds Bodkin when he came to my children's school last year. This was the first tape we listened to and I will soon buy it. Bodkin's many voices combined with his gorgeous instrumental music give this recording a superlative, magical quality. My 12-, 10- and 7-year-old children were enthralled, and frankly, so was I. We could hardly wait until the next time we were all in the car so we could listen to the rest of the tape. Highly recommended.

Bodkin does a great job with both words and music -- I only wish it were longer! A delightful listen for all ages.
