About the Author

BRIAN HAUGHTON was born in Birmingham, England, in 1964, of Irish-Welsh parents. He studied archaeology at Nottingham and Birmingham Universities, and has worked on archaeological projects in England and Greece. He has written on the subject of unusual people in history for various print and Internet publications, and has also authored a book, Coaching Days in the Midlands (Quercus 1997), about stage coaches and highwaymen in the English midlands. His particular interests include the sacred landscapes of prehistory, the modern mysteries and traditional folklore surrounding ancient sites, historical human enigmas, and the occult in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At present he lives in Patra, Greece, where he teaches English and writes for his Mysterious People Website. He long ago fell for the lure of ancient mysteries and the supernatural, initially inspired by television programs such as Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World and Leonard Nimoy's In Search of... series, and later by visits to the ancient sites of Greece, Crete, Britain, and Ireland. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

A qualified archaeologist, Brian Haughton is an author and researcher on the subjects of prehistoric megalithic sites, ancient sacred places and supernatural folklore.

Haughton's first book, 'Hidden History: Lost Civilizations, Secret Knowledge, and Ancient Mysteries' was published in January 2007, and has been translated into eleven languages, including German, Russian, Greek and Thai. His second book 'Haunted Spaces, Sacred Places', which concentrates on the folklore and strange tales surrounding ancient sacred sites, was published by New Page in July 2008. His third book for New Page, 'The Lore of the Ghost', was published on 15 September, 2008. 'History's Mysteries' - the long-awaited follow up to 'Hidden History', will be published in May 2009.

Brian's work has been featured in various print publications across the world including Doorways Magazine, Awareness and All Destiny and on web sites such as the B.B.Cs Legacies, World Mysteries and the Book of Thoth. He is a member of the Folklore Society (England) and serves as a consultant for U.K-based research and investigative organization Parasearch. He long ago fell for the lure of the ancient world and tales of the supernatural, initially inspired by visiting the Neolithic chambered tombs of the Cotswold Hills in England and by reading the ghost stories of Sheridan Le Fanu and M.R. James.

In his spare time Brian plays guitar in the band - The Electric Rays.

I was impressed at the intelligent approach of this author's writing. The areas covered are very diverse, fact-based, fascinating accounts of mysterious places, curious and unexplainable artifacts and other strange and unusual historical events and people across the world. There is no question that this author put considerable time and research into each topic covered. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Written by archaeologist and devote of the esoteric Brian Haughton, Hidden History: Lost Civilizations, Secret Knowledge, and Ancient Mysteries is an amazing survey of mystic places, people, events and structures throughout history. From clues to the true identity of the Queen of Sheba, to ongoing debates concerning the Great Sphinx, to the Irish Newgrange megalith hundreds of years older than the Giza Pyramid and Stonehenge, to evidence for the origins of the Greek myth concerning the Minotaur, each chapter sheds new light on ancient quandaries of human history. A scattering of black-and-white photographs illustrate this fantastic volume; though highly speculative at times, Hidden History is sure to be a treat for anyone with a taste for ancient fables, wonders, and conundrums.

If you're looking for those nuggets of history that conspiratorial political, social, and religious forces have attempted to bury or whitewash, don't look here. There really isn't much in this book that you wouldn't find in an encyclopedia entry. Although the author purports to be objective, it's pretty clear he's a skeptic. Not my idea of "hidden" history. If you want basic summaries of some controversial or historically intriguing topics, maybe this is your book. If you want substance I'd look somewhere else.
