Approaching the irrational passions of life with a manic rush, . . . Brezina forsakes rational structures of thought, instead creating towers of language that often exhibit powerfully abstract imagery. --
David Auerbach, Rain Taxi, Spring, 1999Brezina was the greatest of Czech symbolists, indeed, one of the great figures in European symbolism generally . . . Bulkin has produced a fine and faithful translation which I can recommend to anyone . . . --
James Partridge, The New Presence, March, 1999Hidden History [is] a unique marriage of philosophical investigation and artistic endeavor that produced finely wrought lyrical expositions of Brezina's aesthetic and mystical beliefs. --

A complete volume of Brezina's work has never before appeared in English, though a few translations of his poems have appeared in anthologies long out of print. We thought that giving the importance of his work, a volume of Brezina's essays, which are really prose poems, would be a good way of introducing him to an English-language audience.
