Biography

Born in 1958 in New York City, Fleck seemed destined to be a world-class musician from the start, having been named for three great composers: Béla (for Bartók), Anton (for Webern) and Leos (for Janáček). Already a powerfully creative force in bluegrass, jazz, pop, rock and world beat, Fleck made the classical connection with Perpetual Motion, his 2001 recording that ... Editorial Reviews

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones have wowed audiences for years and pioneered a genre all their own, mixing virtuosic musicianship with experimental, bluegrass, jazz, and pop influences. With their new album, The Hidden Land Fleck, along with bassist Victor Wooten, percussionist Future Man, and saxophonist Jeff Coffin, mark a stripped down and explosive return to their roots, and a new creative peak. DualDisc Edition of The Hidden Land includes a revealing behind-the-scenes short film filled with interviews and performance and a brief, but insightful question and answer session with some fans. Sony. 2006.

This continually changing work is sharp stuff! Victor does some of his best playing here and Jeff Coffin is simply incredible. They take you on an incredible jazz journey to the Hidden Land! My favorite track so far is "Labyrinth" which is one of Bela's showcase tracks which proves that he is a master that paralells Metheny, Stern, and Scofield. If you love great jazz, you will no-doubt enjoy this journey. I have not yet had a chance to view the DVD on the Dual Disc, but I have no doubt that it will be of the highest quality and higly interesting information about the band - as well as live performances! Looking forward to it!!!

I have to admit that I will buy *anything* that has Bela playing on it, but the Flecktones have done it again. The Hidden Land is different from all previous releases. Again.

This release explodes with awesomeness from the Bach piece at the beginning to "The Whistle Tune" at the end. One highlight, for me, is "Subterfuge." Bela gets a bit more electric than usual here. I can't listen to it without grinning.

This DualDisc version would be worth the extra $ even if it was much extra. Enhanced pcm stereo makes a big difference if you have the right equipment, although 5.1 would have made me wet myself.

"Bring It Home," the video on the DVD side, has all kinds of 'Tones goodies you'll just have to see for yourself.

I first purchased this album several years ago when it first came out. At the time, I did not know that there was a dual-disc version of this album and waited several more years to purchase this particular version. In the meantime, this disc has gotten a lot of playtime; it is constantly entertaining and wowing me. The musicianship on this album is truly top-notch and second-to-none. This album takes you on a musical journey or better yet, it takes you inside a musical epiphany of sorts. From Bach-to-Bluegrass and jazz-to-world music and nearly everywhere in between, this is not a treat, it is a buffet for a royal family!

To address the dual-disc aspect of this album, it contains the whole album in Enhanced PCM Stereo, a hilarious and light-hearted short-film starring the Flecktones and some special guests, and a music workshop with two live performances and a Q & A session.

Recommended for Fans of the Flecktones, jazz, and just great music in general.

Flecktones fans will not be disappointed. This is very solid work, picking up where they left off on "Little Worlds". Happy music, not to be missed.
