5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, lyrical novel about an artist's life..., March 16, 2005
Gabrielle Roy is absolutely unparalelled for her imagery, her perception, and the depth of her characters. The Hidden Mountain is a must read for artists, poets, and lovers of literature and of nature. As I read this wonderful book, I marvelled at how frequently I came across phrases I had to write down, they so eloquently captured the essence of life, art, or emotion - it is an infinitely quotable novel. The story follows the life of a young man whose nameless longing compels him along the rivers of the Canadian north, sketching the places and people he encounters along the way. The devotion to beauty and fierce connection with nature and human nature on every page just draws you through Pierre's experiences as he discovers himself as an artist and a solitary wanderer. This is a sublime read, I can't recommend it enough.
