From Library Journal
Many of the native orchids of North America are regrettably vanishing from their traditional habitats. Fragile, often tiny, and frequently hidden between logs, branches, or leaves, these wild orchids are truly stunning in form and color. Botanist and photographer Thomas Bulat has captured on film the extravagant beauty of these species and their habitats. Hidden Orchids presents 89 magnificent photographs, many of them taken with a closeup lens. The result is a visual feast that will impress the reader with the critical need for habitat preservation. Accompanying the photographs are brief ancedotal comments and several short poems written by Marilyn Bulat. A short appendix on the identification and location of orchids is followed by descriptions of individual species and a list of botanical names. While not an essential purchase, this book will make an attractive addition to large public libraries or specialized collections.?Laurie Bartolini, Legislative Research Unit, Illinois General Assembly, Springfield

From Booklist
The Bulats present 86 exquisite color photographs of wild orchids native to temperate North America in a book that, neither guidebook nor scientific text, aims to help the reader become aware of wild orchids' grace and beauty and acquainted with their habitats. The examples photographed come from four broad kinds of habitat--woodlands, prairies, mountains, and wetlands. Many are endangered species, and most are rare. Line drawings accompany some photographs to show the actual size of the specimens, and an annotated list of all the orchids featured that includes botanical and habitat information and Latin and common names is appended.
