Hidden Place is the first single to come off of, what I beleive is Björk's best album to date. The moment you hear this, you'll know why it is on any björk fan's top 10.

The lyrics are...frankly...strange, but from the "Through the warmthest cord of care" right to the last belting of "In that hidden Place" you are in for a spectacular aural (and visual, if you watch the video ;) ) experience.

Generous Palmstroke is perhaps the most popular B-Side off of Vespertine. It was co-written by Zeena Parkins (harpist) and Björk during the recording of Vespertine, however didn't fit in the feeling of the album and was scrapped.

If you ever hear or see live versions of this track, it truly blows you away. I would easily recomend a live version over the studio recording because it has so much more character to it, however, I do love the studio recording for what it is worth.

Verandi is a really random song that Björk had written before her work on Dancer in the Dark. It sounds nothing like any of Björk's other songs whatsoever. The really fabulous string arrangement by Jolly Mukherjee makes this a powerful and emotional song in every way. Truly the clmax of this whole single.

The song was made available for download on Björk's website (you can find it if you really want it) along with 'teaser' arrangements of some notable songs off of vespertine.

Overall, this is deffinitely a single worth buying. Yes, there are only 3 tracks on the entire CD, but they stand out so much that you would feel bad downloading them for $2 off of Napster.

So go on! Spend that $1.50 on an almost new copy in the Amazon Marketplace!

Bjork does it again and this (the first single off her new album) single shows a different side to everyone's favourite icelandic pixie. "Hidden Place" is one of the best songs off the album..it is deeply introspective and wistful.
However the real highlight of this disc is the 2 bsides. Generous Palmstroke is sheer genius...the first mintue or so hauls you in. Verdanthi as well is wonderful.
The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because of the price and the fact that the Hidden Place single (pt 2) has another 3 great songs. Why they didn't just put it on one maxi single is beyond me.

Bjork's latest releases in the spirit of the forthcoming Vespertine live in the top percentile of her repertoire. There is much love in this music, especially "A Hidden Place" (one of her best ever). Personally, I find the lyrics especially rewarding. So far, these singles are even better than Vespertine as a whole. But if you're debating between singles, this first one is more essential than the second. I have all her (tons of) singles; if I only were allowed to keep five, Hidden Place Part 1 would be in that bunch of keepers. All the sound is, of course, in keeping with her new musical theme: sacred, fragile. "Generous Palmstroke" and "Verandi" belong on a solid five star album. Buried treasures here, folks. Naturally, an EP combining both Hidden Place singles will probably released many months in the future at fairer price (as has happened in the past) for those who are patient and willing to take that chance - but can you wait that long?

Well in all truthfulness I don't actually own this single but it doesn't make me any less qualified to write a review... I downloaded both Hidden Places and Verandi and found them both to be hypnotic and engaging. Since I first heard the dancable Post about a year ago I have never really considered myself a fan of longevity but am slowly moving toward that belief. Most older fans of Bjork seem disappointed by her sudden transaction of sound, while I, on the other hand, find it much appealing and satisfactory to my tastes. She still carries electronic beats and wacky vocal styles, which have made her a household name, but it's just more grinded into the background, as is her new take on morbid choir singing. This technique, though, proves most excellent here in complementing the rich layering of orchestration accompanied by subtle electronic grooves and, of course, Bjork's own creative self.
In one word, Ravishing.
P.S. In case you're wondering why I rated this 4-stars it is simply because of the fact that I've never before heard Generous Palmstroke... though I'm sure (just like everything else by this great artist) it is stunning beyond words.

Bjork has always surprised both fans and critics with every album she has released, and the first single off "Vespertine" shows her flair for experimentation. "Hidden Place" is both grand and intimate, and there is no other way to describe it. For her new songs, Bjork has said that she wants to create a sense of coziness, the kinds of songs you would listen to on a cold day, indoors (the album had the appropriate working title "Domestika"). Bjork is like no other artist in her field, so it is only fair that such a great single receives five stars.
