About the Author

Ernest Holmes (1887 – 1960) was the founder of the worldwide Religious Science Movement. A uniquely gifted scholar with a vast command of the world’s spiritual philosophies, his magnum opus, The Science of Mind, has been in continuous print since 1926. Other inspirational works include Creative Mind, This Thing Called You, The Art of Life, Creative Mind and Success, Love and Law, The Hidden Power of the Bible, and many others.

More About the Author

Ernest Shurtleff Holmes (1887-1960) was an avid student of the world's spiritual systems. He found in these a common denominator he called the Science Mind, a practical philosophy for abundant living. Beginning as self-educated lecturer, Holmes developed a large following of students and went on to formalize his work by founding Science of Mind magazine, an educational institute, and the United Church Religious Science. His writings have inspired the work of countless clergy, business leaders, physicians, and psychologists and have helped to shape the guiding principles of the modern human potential movement, both spiritual and secular. Born and raised in Maine, Holmes spent much of his adult life in California.

This exegesis on the hidden lessons of scripture's most familiar passages was first published in 1929. The new edition comes with an index and a preface in which it is explained how every religion has exoteric (outer) and esoteric (inner) aspects. For example, ritual represents the exoteric whilst the experience of the participants are esoteric. These two aspects have also been likened to the difference between a map and a journey.

It is difficult to describe esoteric experiences as they are associated with a different state of consciousness. But by contemplating the meaning in our Judeo-Christian scriptures we unite thought with emotion to reveal a deeper meaning. According to Rabbinical tradition there are four levels of understanding:

The face value or literal interpretation is called Pashat, the next level is called Remez (hint) which is the implied meaning. The third level is Drash (search), the allegorical or typological application. Finally there is Sod (hidden), the secret meaning of the text which often involves the numerical value of words and letters. Holmes' exegesis is of the interior type: Remez, Drash and Sod. This approach makes the reader contemplate what passages might mean personally rather than literally.

Moses taught the universal law of cause and effect, and Jesus revealed a direct relationship between God and mankind. Religious Science is a science of mind and spirit - psychological, metaphysical, mental, spiritual, idealistic and practical. Prayer in faith, believing, restores our sense of oneness with the Creator. This book first provides the Biblical passage which is then followed by a detailed exegesis.

Every paragraph is rich with meaning and insight, every thought worth a lifetime of contemplation. It really helps to be familiar with the Bible, but it is not necessary - this book is gently and clearly written in such a way that anyone can reap the riches of what the Bible truly has to offer.

This is my introduction to Ernest Holmes, truely a wise and remarkable manm long before The Secret became an evolutionary trend.

Please do not mistake Religious Science for Christian Science or Scientology. It is neither.

Probably Ernest Holmes' best and most important book. Well written, insightful, and studied. More people need to read this book, the world would be a much better place for it.

Other reviewers have commented on the excellence of the author's writing and insight and I agree, but I wanted to comment on the Kindle Experience of this book.

It has a clickable Table of Contents in the front of the book. Very helpful in finding your way and re-visiting some favorite chapters.

I always look for comments on the Kindle Experience in book reviews. Sometimes it makes a difference in what version you purchase.

When you open a Kindle book, it usually goes to the first chapter. If you want to view the "front matter" of the book, copywright info, publishing edition, Table of Contents, etc., you can use the PAGE BACK button to get to the cover of the book and then page forward. OR you can use the Menu, GO TO function to find the Table of Contents, which is sometimes in the back of the book and sometimes non-existant.

Hope this helps some new Kindle owners.

Ernest Holmes is an excellent teacher, and communicator. What you already know about the Bible will be expanded on, and challenged to the next level. Covering both the Old and New Testament, Holmes allows you to see the deeper and hidden meaning of what is written, how it applies to everyone, and the part we all play. Holmes does not sell religion, but opens your Mind and Soul to the Truth.

Ernest Holmes has made the Bible come more alive with his exploration of its true meaning. The Bible has "always" been around and reading it can be an exercise in mind-numbing rote reading or it can be understood as true "living history". Much of the Bible can be verified historically but that isn't what its greatest impact can be. Seeing it as the history of how men have lived and acted and treated each other through the ages makes one realize that not a great deal has changed in those ages. There is a lesson to be learned here and, were we to learn it, what a greater world could be realized; one filled with love for each other and joy untold.

Creative Mind and Success, by the same author, stirred my soul. I've bought numerous copies of it for friends and lived ones, because it has so positively influenced my life. This book, The Hidden Power of the Bible, though good, did not impact me quite as deeply. Although, if your Inteest is more in the bible, the author does dissect the good book quite well. And it is done well. So a rating of three stars may not be fair of me, as the book simply was not formatted in a way that readily appealed to and affected me as much as Creative Mind and Success did.
