5.0 out of 5 stars The Hidden Story Reveals the Roots of Illiteracy, January 19, 2008

This review is from: The Hidden Story: How America's Present-Day Reading Disabilities Grew Out of the Underhanded Meddling of America's First Experimental Ps (Paperback)
This book is a penetrating investigation of the theoretical and historical reason why there are so many poor readers in America today. It reads like a mystery thriller for those puzzled by the prevalence of illiteracy America.

I personally appreciated the book because of the enormous impact it had on my success as a reading teacher. There are only two ways to teach reading, from the "sounds" or from the "meaning." The way a child is initially taught will determine which way they read for the rest of their lives. Good readers are objective readers who read accurately from the "sounds" because that is the way they were initially taught. Poor readers (less than optimal) are subjective readers who read inaccurately from the "meaning" because they were initially taught to read that way.

Miss Rodgers delves deeply into the psychological foundations of illiteracy and traces the historical development of the whole-word "meaning" method through its principal architects. Miss Rodger's mentions Edward Miller whole-dyslexia assessment in conjunction with her theory of two kinds of readers as illustrated by Henry Suzzallo's 1913 Reading Triangle.

I also have a video review of the book on YouTube entitled, The Hidden Story.
